HERMITAGE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A woman is in critical condition after she was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross Lebanon Pike Monday night, officials said.

According to the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD), the crash happened on Monday, April 22 just before 9 p.m. on Lebanon Pike near Tyler Drive.

Authorities said the woman was struck after she left the Thortons gas station and was attempting to cross the road to the Hermitage Inn.

The woman was wearing dark clothing and was not in a crosswalk when the crash occurred, officials said.

According to MNPD, the woman sustained critical injuries and was taken to Skyline Medical Center.

District 14 Metro Councilman Jordan Huffman was heartbroken to hear about the crash and said far too many Nashvillians are falling victim to what he called ‘unnecessary situations’.

“I’m very fortunate that it was not worse,” Huffman said. “I’m fortunate that she did survive the incident, but there’s definitely a lesson from this that the city can take that we need to be investing a lot more in pedestrian safety.”

Huffman told News 2 that plans are in the works to make that high-traffic area safer including adding better lighting, safer crosswalks and methods of alerting drivers of what may lie ahead.

“At night, there’s always a ton of pedestrians crossing that particular intersection,” Huffman said. “They’re coming from the hotel across the street to the gas station. We actually were just over there yesterday with the Nashville Department of Transportation & Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT). I did a district tour and I showed them that exact spot, so I feel confident that there will be something that will be done.”

Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell recently announced his $3.1B transit plan . His proposal still needs the green light from Metro Council, a state comptroller-approved auditor and the Davidson County Election Commission before it can officially be on the November ballot. Huffman said he’s a fan of O’Connell’s plan.

“We can do a lot with the transit referendum if it passes,” Huffman said. “This is more of a traffic referendum than anything, and it also keeps our pedestrians safe by investing in their safety.”

No other information about the incident was immediately released.
