Weekend Celebration at the Baldwin Crenshaw Mall
Southern California residents looking for something to do this weekend, can take the family and over to the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Mall, to enjoy the 2nd Annual Leimert Park Jazz Festival. The one-day event is Saturday, August 28, 2021.
This year, the festival has chosen the mall to celebrate jazz and display the art and cultural heritage that the Leimert Park area is historically known for.
The celebration will feature performances from premier jazz artists, located in and around the L.A. are.
The Saturday afternoon in the mall is scheduled to be an exciting event for all, and the festival will include:
- Numerous food trucks on site.
- Free backpacks and school supplies given away.
- Free COVID-19 vaccinations for unvaccinated individuals, 12 and over. People can just walk up, and no appointment or insurance is required.
In addition to COVID-19 testing, testing for HIV/STD will also be available for individuals who want it. Appointments to get tested are not necessary. This is offered to the community by the Black Leadership AIDS Crisis Coalition of the AIDS Health Foundation.
Besides these incentives to come out and experience the festival, there will also be a resource zone for the community to get health and wellness information, as well as a variety of useful financial information, such as:
- First-time homebuyer programs
- Small business/entrepreneurial programs
- Physical/emotional & mental wellness programs and services
- Youth programs and details about available services
Diane Robertson is the festival’s executive producer, in association with the World Stage. She’s tells how happy she to finally see the festival live, since she rebranded what used to be a block party on a street adjacent to Leimert Park.
Because of COVID, the 2020 first annual event had to be restructured and turned into a virtual event, but Robertson noted that nowadays: “People have virtual event fatigue.” She believes the new location, along with the strong lineup of artists is just what the festival needs. According to Robertson:
“I’m expecting this to be the year the festival is put on the map,”
Hosted by Leroy Downs, featured in the lineup are: Sy Smith, Dwight Trible, Katalyst Collective; Adaawe, Azar Lawrence, Jose Rizo’s Mongorama, and Albert ‘Tootie’ Heath, featuring Jacques Lesure.
The doors will open at 2:00pm and the performances will run from 3 to 8:45 p.m.
Expected to make an appearance are: City Councilmen Mark Ridley-Thomas and Marqueece Harris-Dawson. Ridley-Thomas will introduce the closing act and Harris-Dawson will be tasked with introducing winners of the festival’s art competition.
The artwork created by winner: Jacadi White and the finalists: Maria Elena Cruz and Udeze Chidi Ukwuoma, will be on display for the public to view.
Robertson makes the assurance that festival organizers “do the best we can” to ensure safety.
Everyone, will be required to wear a mask, regardless of vaccination status, and signs will be posted throughout the festival, to remind attendees of the safety precautions. Masks will also be available for those who require them.
