Plano runs past West in finale but misses playoffs on tiebreaker
PLANO – The Plano football team entered Friday’s regular-season finale still alive in the playoff hunt but needing a bit of help elsewhere in 7-6A. The Wildcats held up their end of the deal after distancing from Plano West late for a 28-14 victory from Clark Stadium, but the requisite aid didn’t materialize as Richardson Berkner clinched the final postseason berth out of the district following a 38-10 victory over Richardson Pearce. Friday’s win created a three-way for third place in the 7-6A standings at 4-3 between Plano, Plano East and Berkner – a scenario where the Wildcats were the odd team out due to point differential tiebreakers. “We did it to ourselves. We earned this position where you have to depend on other people,” said Cody White, Plano head coach. “You can’t do that in Texas, you have to take care of yourselves. It’s a good lesson to learn, and it’s frustrating because I’d love to see these seniors play another game.” While the result denied the Wildcats what would have been their first back-to-back playoff appearances since 2013-14, Friday still gave the program a winning note to conclude its 2026 campaign after overcoming a West program that had

Allen, Frisco ISD sport state-ranked boys basketball teams to begin 2026-27 season
Nov. 13 marks the first day of non-district games for UIL boys basketball programs, officially putting the 2026-27 season in full swing. Last season saw programs like Frisco Heritage and Little Elm make history by winning the first state championships in their respective histories. Both teams graduated sizable senior classes, while other area squads look to make their own push towards hoisting a UIL title by season’s end. Several of those programs have generated some early buzz for 2026-27 as part of the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches' preseason state rankings. Class 6A 1. Allen Ranked atop 6A to begin the season, the Eagles are coming off a 24-7 campaign that produced a District 6-6A championship and an appearance in the regional finals. Allen has advanced at least three rounds deep in the playoffs each of the past three seasons, including a state semifinal run in 2025, and it’ll navigate its 2026-27 campaign with four of its top six scorers from last season back in the fold. The Eagles graduated the all-state production and leadership of guard Nehemiah Lawrence and will look players like all-region guard and senior Cadarian Urune-Williams, a Lamar commit, to help pick up that slack. Playoff Volleyball Roundup: Allen, McKinney Boyd to meet in regional final; Celina, Reedy, McKinney North advance
There will be a new state champion in Class 6A Division I volleyball this season. After a two-year reign atop that bracket, Trophy Club Byron Nelson met its match on Friday in the regional semifinals against McKinney Boyd. The Lady Broncos and Lady Bobcats met twice during the preseason with Nelson getting the better of the action each time, but the playoff rematch saw Boyd return fire. Despite Nelson winning a closely contested opening set 25-23, the Lady Broncos answered with three decisive wins on frames of 25-19, 25-19 and 25-18. Friday’s win advances Boyd to its first regional final since 2015 and will have a familiar face on the other side of the net in District 6-6A rival Allen. The Lady Eagles, ranked No. 4 in the nation by MaxPreps, improved to 40-2 on Friday after defeating Northwest Eaton in three sets (25-20, 25-19, 25-22) to secure their second regional final appearance in three years. Allen and Boyd will square off for the fourth time this season. The Lady Broncos accounted for the Lady Eagles’ first loss of the year during non-district play on Aug. 15, but Allen got the better of both district matchups between the two. While

Marcus erupts in fourth quarter to defeat Wakeland 35-24 in season finale
FLOWER MOUND – The Marcus football team saved its best for last on Thursday night, scoring 21 unanswered fourth-quarter points to defeat Frisco Wakeland 35-24 at Marauder Stadium and earn its first District 5-6A victory of the season. Running back Drew Emmert rushed for 184 yards and four touchdowns on 30 carries, while quarterback Cash Davis completed 20-of-24 passes for 219 yards and a touchdown as the Marauders (3-7, 1-6) snapped a six-game losing streak. Trailing 17-14 entering the fourth quarter, Marcus took the lead when Davis connected with Caleb Steen on a 37-yard touchdown pass with 5:44 remaining. The Marauders recovered an onside kick, setting up Emmert's 7-yard touchdown run with 2:51 left. Emmert added a 20-yard scoring run just over a minute later to extend the lead to 35-17. Marcus coach Mike Alexander said he knew Wakeland would be dangerous late, having watched the Wolverines win their previous two games with fourth-quarter rallies. "I told them, 'Don't be surprised in a tight game in the fourth quarter because they're not going to stop playing,'" Alexander said. With the game still in doubt, Alexander delivered a message to his offense while the defense was on the field. "I said,

Emerson ends season on high note with last-minute heroics against Frisco
FRISCO – Ahead of Friday evening, both Frisco’s and Emerson’s football destinies were predetermined. Frisco would be postseason-bound and Emerson would instantly enter the conversation for teams with playoff-level talent left out of the dance regardless of the result of their head-to-head showdown at Kuykendall Stadium. That would not prevent the game from being electric as, despite trailing for the majority, Emerson would take the lead with 29 seconds left to steal and seal a 26-24 victory. “Just a great group of kids,” said Emerson head coach Billy Ellis. “And we deserve to be in the playoffs. I don’t mean that as a slight to Celina, Panther Creek or anybody, but we’re a playoff team. I told them I expect you to go out and play like a playoff team and show them how much you deserve it, because they do.” To note, Emerson finished District 4-5A Division II play 5-3 and tied for third place alongside Celina and Panther Creek but lost both head-to-heads, keeping them from entering the postseason. After a third quarter that saw just three possessions and no points, Frisco (7-3, 6-2) entered the fourth quarter with a 21-20 edge. A pair of Emerson (7-3, 5-3)
