May 13, 1949, in The Star: Today marks the end of the 1948-49 school term for all Calhoun County public schools, which number 32 in total, with an enrollment of more than 9,000 students. The system employs 263 teachers. Also this date: Logan and Ladiga streets in Piedmont are at present badly torn up, but city leaders say it’s for a good reason: the installation of natural gas lines into the northern Calhoun County city, a project which began in February. It consists of a four-inch steel high-pressure pipe that extends from White Plains to the downtown section, a distance of 14 miles by way of the Nances Creek Valley. At least 60 percent of the city’s residents should be able to have the gas in their homes sometime during July; more than 700 meters for residential use have been ordered. Additionally: Ladiga District Negro Scouts held their May Court of Honor recently at Piedmont’s Bethune High School. The first Bronze Palm to be earned by a Choccolocco Council Negro Scout was given to Edward Caldwell Jr. of Troop 311 of Jacksonville, for six months service as an Eagle Scout, with at least five additional merit badges earned above the 21 required for Eagle rank. One of Caldwell’s badges was for chemistry.
