MUNCIE, Ind. — A police chase that began in Henry County ended Thursday morning with a fatal crash at one of Muncie's busiest intersections.

According to Indiana State Police, a Dodge Dart — driven by Zacrey Kane Antrim, 28, of Van Buren in Grant County — was traveling northbound on Ind. 3 near Henry County Road 950 North when a Henry County sheriff's deputy tried to pull the vehicle over. A chase then ensued.

A press release indicated the deputy intended to stop the Dart "for a traffic infraction and suspicion of an impaired driver."

Emergency dispatchers were notified when the chase entered Delaware County, and a short time later, the Muncie city limits, with the Dart eventually traveling eastbound on McGalliard Road at what ISP called "a high rate of speed."

Shortly after 6 a.m. at McGalliard's intersection with Tillotson Avenue, near the Ball State University campus, Antrim's vehicle ran a red light and struck a Jeep traveling northbound on Tillotson that was driven by Shanta Sharrel Schmiesing, 38, of Muncie.

Both vehicles came to rest in a grassy area northwest of the intersection, according to the state police news release.

A passenger in the Dodge Dart, 25-year-old Nicholas Wayne Woolum of Muncie, was pronounced dead at the scene by Delaware County Coroner Gavin Greene.

Both drivers were taken by ambulance to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, where they were reported to be in critical condition. Schmiesing was later transferred to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

The release said the investigation was "active and ongoing." The name of the Henry County sheriff's deputy will be released later, it said.

The Muncie Police Department's traffic reconstruction team was also involved in the investigation.

"The pursuit originated from circumstances out of our jurisdiction," Deputy Police Chief Melissa Criswell said in a release. "The Muncie Police Department was not involved in the pursuit."
