Catch the Jamaican buzz at Mr. Buzz Bakery in Utica
Mr. Buzz Bakery, located on the corner of Genesee and Arnold Streets in Utica, where one could toss a Jamaican CoCo Roll from its parking lot and ping Slice Pizzeria across the street, looks forward to celebrating its third anniversary on July 1 of sharing authentic Jamaican cakes, breads, beef patties (as well as chicken and vegetable versions), and Jamaican Food Fridays, sharing traditional entrees and sides with Utica and its Mohawk Valley neighbors. Owner Delroy Thomas moved to Utica from Jamaica 20 years ago. His bakery carries on a family tradition, where he remembers his childhood in Jamaica helping and learning from his father, Victor Thomas, who owned and operated Buzz Rock Bakery on the Caribbean island. Naming his Utica bakery ‘Mr. Buzz’ is a homage in honor the elder Thomas, as his son says the name emerged from the community “buzz” about how good his father’s cakes were. When queried, so they were really good? “Good? His cakes were excellent,” effused Thomas. Delroy Thomas shares growing up in his father’s business, as his son is now growing into his. Thomas’s son, Jevar, attended Utica city schools before joining his own father in learning and running the family business
