MOUNT CARMEL, Tenn. (WJHL) – Mount Carmel Elementary School in Hawkins County hosted its STEAM Night on Tuesday.

The students had an exciting night filled with science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) related activities. The event was hosted by Hands-On Museum, Bays Mountain, the STREAMWorks organization , 4H and ETSU.

News Channel 11 spoke with Kim McCann, 4th grade teacher at Mount Carmel Elementary.

Johnson City youth football and cheer registration begins Tuesday

“Every activity that is set up has to do with math and science or some arts and it’s fun things, it’s hands-on that they’re doing, that even though it’s fun and they’re enjoying themselves, they’re learning,” McCann said.

The Wildcats were enthusiastic and ready to learn.

“I teach fourth grade, and I had kindergartners and first-graders come up to me saying, ‘Ms. McCann, I can’t wait to see the drones! And, what are we making with the little marbles in the paint?'”

As a dedicated educator, McCann said she knew STEAM Night was the place for her, too.

“Just to walk in and to hear the excitement, to see the different activities going on. To me, that lets me know I’m where I need to be.”

According to McCann, the school hopes to upgrade STEAM Night with a larger event in the fall. They hope to include other schools from the area and plan to focus more on reading and writing, as well.
