Suspect charged in crash that killed 86-year-old woman at Mount Airy Walmart

MOUNT AIRY, N.C. (WGHP) — A person is facing several charges as the result of a crash at a Mount Airy Walmart that resulted in the death of an 86-year-old woman.

At around 6:11 p.m. on March 31, officers with the Mount Airy Police Department came to Walmart on 2241 Rockford Street after getting a report of a crash involving a pedestrian.

Investigators identified the pedestrian as Bonnie Smith Hennings, 86, of East Bend. She was airlifted to the hospital where she died as a result of her injuries on April 1.

Police identified the driver of the vehicle that fatally struck Hennings as Jerry Lee Speaks.

On Tuesday, Speaks was charged with involuntary manslaughter, careless and reckless driving, not having liability insurance and unsafe movement.
