New owner promises few changes for 77-year-old Esquire Club
Few may have noticed the transition, but Kavanaugh’s Esquire Club, 1025 N. Sherman Ave., has a new owner. In business and owned by the Kavanaugh family since 1947, the modest bar/supper club is now owned by Craig Spaulding, long known in the Madison hospitality industry and most notably a co-owner of the old Cafe Montmartre, a forward-looking gathering spot with good drinks, live music and poetry slams (Heritage Tavern now occupies the site at 127 E. Mifflin). Most recently Spaulding has been tending bar at the AC Lounge in the AC Hotel downtown.

I'm very fortunate my career allows me to meet different people, learn new things, and share stories about what makes our communities special. My favorite part of it all is showing people worlds outside of their own. Hopefully they will also learn something new, and think, "Hmm. I've never thought of it that way before." Those types of stories connect us all. I believe that, at the end of the day, we are all neighbors -- even if we don't all live near each other.
Wisconsin judge dismisses lawsuit challenging state’s new wolf management plan
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by animal welfare advocates seeking to invalidate Wisconsin’s new wolf management plan. Dane County Circuit Judge Stephen Ehlke threw out the case on Monday. The lawsuit accused Wisconsin wildlife officials of violating the state’s open meetings law and disregarding comments from wolf researchers and supporters. Ehlke ruled from the bench, granting a motion to dismiss filed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and its board. The lawsuit was filed by the Great Lakes Wildlife Alliance, also known as Friends of the Wisconsin Wolf & Wildlife. The group could file an appeal.
Not Just Another Day: Who has the nerve to appreciate root canals?
There’s probably nothing that can set one’s teeth on edge quite like hearing that you need to have a root canal. Some of us would rather fight tooth and nail to keep from having such a distressing dental procedure. But, believe it or not, there’s actually a “National Root Canal Appreciation Day!” It was yesterday, May 8th, I kid you not. This wacky day in defense of dentistry was created back in 2005 by a Madison, WI dentist, Dr. Chris Kammer, who became known as...

Letter | Let's help pollinators all year
Dear Editor: This spring, let us all be filled with cheer with all the wonderful folks in the city of Madison maintaining residential and commercial parcels with native landscaping. These areas will provide critical habitat for our native insects by the native flowers, which bloom in high summer and into...
