Big 12 Team With 'Electric Offense' Named Underrated This Season

College football is all about offense and scoring as many points as you can. The top three teams in points per game last season were the LSU Tigers (45.5), Oregon Ducks (44.2), and USC Trojans (41.8).

Having a high-powered offense can do you a lot of good. The Tigers' offense was led by Heisman winner Jayden Daniels. Oregon had Bo Nix under center, and the Trojans had 2022 Heisman winner Caleb Williams.

The West Virginia Mountaineers were very exciting to watch last season. West Virginia had a good balance on offense but was dominant in the running game. The Mountaineer rushing attack featured a dynamic duo in Jaheim White and CJ Donaldson.

PFF College's Max Chadwick picked the Mountaineers as one of his underrated teams for 2024. Chadwick was dumbfounded that West Virginia had a six-and-a-half-win total for this season on FanDuel.

"...I'm going with West Virginia, who has an electric offense next year. A really great ground game, honestly," Chadwick said. "You see it right there, six and a half wins on FanDuel. Dude, they went 9-4 last year. This a nine-win team at West Virginia last year."

Returning a star player like Garrett Greene at quarterback is a plus. Greene was tied for most rushing touchdowns by a QB last season. He had a career-high 2,406 passing yards and 16 touchdowns through the air in 2023.

"They bring back Garrett Greene, who is one of our top ten quarterbacks in the country. ...Also, tied for 1st among all quarterbacks in the country with 13 rushing touchdowns, and almost 800 rushing yards," Chadwick said. "Really good at avoiding sacks."

The backfield pairing of White and Donaldson returning should also do the Mountaineers plenty of favors. White had the most rushing yards among true freshmen with 842. Donaldson was fourth in the Big 12 in rushing touchdowns.

The only players ahead of Donaldson last season were Oklahoma State Cowboys RB Ollie Gordon, Kansas Jayhawks RB Devin Neal, and UCF Knights RB RJ Harvey.

"...Behind him, they also have one of the best backfields in the country," Chadwick said. "Jaheim White led all true freshman last year with 842 yards and he averaged 7.7 yards per carry, which led the nation for running backs. ...CJ Donaldson had 11 rushing touchdowns, which was fourth in the Big 12 behind only Ollie Gordon, Devin Neal, and RJ Harvey."

Chadwick thinks West Virginia is criminally underrated heading into 2024.

"I have no earthly idea, Dalton, how a team that went 9-4 last year and brings back some much production is all of a sudden a six-and-a-half-win total for 2024. West Virginia, I think is criminally underrated right now."
