West Virginia University men’s basketball head coach Darian DeVries’ roster construction efforts are still in progress, but he and his staff have already built a strong foundation.

As of May 3, here is how the WVU men’s basketball roster stands.

    Returning to roster

Soon-to-be sophomore Ofri Naveh is the only returner with semi-significant playing time for the Mountaineers last year. Naveh confirmed in early May that DeVries granted him a position on next year’s roster. A native of Israel , he was one of the last additions to interim head coach Josh Eilert’s squad last summer.

WVU two-sport athlete Aden Tagaloa-Nelson , who plays safety on the football team, is also still listed on the 2024-25 roster.

    Transfer portal acquisitions (signed)

DeVries did not have to look far to add his first transfer once he accepted the head coaching job in March. He swiftly confirmed that his son Tucker DeVries , who won MVC Player of the Year and MVC Freshman of the Year during his time at Drake, will join the Mountaineer basketball team for his senior season. As a junior, he averaged 21.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game last season.

It took a while for DeVries to continue adding through the transfer portal, but another slew of portal players pledged to WVU in April, including former Illinois guard Sencire Harris . Harris, a former four-star prospect out of high school, took a non-injury-related redshirt year this past season after playing in all 33 games for the Illini as a freshman. In his freshman season, the 6-foot-4, 160-pound guard averaged 3.7 points and 2.1 rebounds per game.

Shortly after Harris’ commitment and subsequent signing, his former Illinois teammate Amani Hansberry followed suit. Hansberry was the No. 1 prospect out of Maryland in 247Sports’ Class of 2023, and he averaged 2.4 points and 2.1 rebounds per game in 19 appearances for the Fighting Illini this past year.

Former UIC guard Toby Okani broke the streak of University of Illinois transfers when he signed with WVU in April. Okani spent two years at Duquesne before transferring to UIC for his junior and senior seasons. A three-star recruit out of high school, the 6-foot-8, 210-pound Cushing Academy (Mass.) graduate was ranked as the No. 5 player in Massachusetts and the No. 29 player in New England by New England Recruiting Report. He made 10 starts as a freshman and 15 starts as a sophomore at Duquesne where he averaged 4.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. At UIC, he averaged 11 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game over two seasons.

Former Fresno State and Nebraska center Eduardo Andre is the most recent portal player to sign his grant-in-aid with WVU. Andre, a 6-foot-10, 248-pound center, averaged 7.3 points and five rebounds for Fresno State last season and 8.3 points with 5.9 rebounds two years ago. Before his time at Fresno State, he spent two seasons at Nebraska where he came off the bench. The Luanda, Angola, and London native played high school ball at AZ Compass Prep, where he was the No. 11 player in Arizona’s 2020 class and the No. 43 center in the nation.

    Transfer portal acquisitions (committed)

The highest-profile transfer that isn’t named DeVries reportedly committed to the Mountaineers in early May when Oklahoma State guard Javon Small pledged to join to WVU, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein . Small, who was On3 Sports’ No. 1 point guard in the transfer portal, and he averaged 15.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists for the Cowboys last season.

    High school recruits (signed)

As of May 2, KJ Tenner is the lone member of DeVries’ 2024 high school recruiting class. Tenner was previously committed to Drake and is the most recent Tennessee Class AAAA Mr. Basketball. He is a 5-foot-10-inch, 140-pound guard from Cordova High School in Cordova, Tennessee, and he had other offers from Arkansas State, Bradley, Central Michigan and Murray State.
