He's crossed the US on foot 3 times. Meet Sacramento's real deal Forrest Gump
Dennis Godby estimates he’s heard quips related to the 1994 film “Forrest Gump” perhaps 1,000 times. The title character of that film runs across the United States more than once. Godby, a 70-year-old naturopathic doctor who lives in West Sacramento, likes to tell people that while “Forrest Gump” was a movie, he’s the real deal. In September, Godby finished a roughly 3,450-mile walk that he made across the U.S. in five stages over five years. It was only his latest adventure. In 1978, Godby ran about 1,420 miles, from Corvallis, Oregon, to near Calgary. He ran across the U.S. in the mid-1980s and again in 2011, the second time with his two sons and his nephew. On a recent day, Godby said he felt like he could immediately start walking from Seattle, where he finished his recent cross-country walk, to Sacramento. “For the first few weeks when I get back every year, I really miss it,” Godby said during an interview at his office in midtown Sacramento. “Because I’m back to, a lot of times, the mundane. And even though I like what I do, that is really exciting, being out on the road.” Godby is part of an eclectic

Looking for wedding or other special occasion flowers? New florist in Folsom can help
Brides and others looking for luxury floral bouquets and gifts will be able to find them at a new floral shop that will open in Folsom. Mayde Floral & Gifts is opening at 350 Palladio Parkway in the Folsom Palladio shopping plaza. The florist, which aims to open in late November, will specialize in seasonal floral arrangements and specialty bouquets. The shop is owned by Taylor Breshears, who was born and raised in El Dorado Hills. She said she had been seeking to fulfill a lifelong passion since her 20s, moving from careers in real estate and consulting to entrepreneurship, where she is putting her love for crafts and flowers to use. Breshears’ future in flower design came about after she made arrangements for victims of the November 2025 Stockton shooting. That’s when she realized how she could help others. “I really love people, relationships, and helping humanity,” Breshears said. “So I thought it’s a really good way to be a business owner and be able to do that at the same time.” Breshears also credits her career choice to early motherhood. She said becoming a mom at the age of 15 taught her responsibility and resilience that acclimated her
