MONTVILLE, NJ - The Montville Baseball and Softball Association held its opening day parade and ceremony on Saturday, April 20. Baseball and softball players of all ages, along with their coaches, walked from Lazar Middle School to the Municipal Fields. The parade was led by a police motorcyclist, police cars, the Montville Township High School marching band, and fire trucks.
The marching band also performed the National Anthem once everyone arrived on the field, while members of VFW Post 5481 Color Guard presented the colors. Over twenty-five kindergarten through twelfth grade baseball and softball teams were represented on opening day. Players on the MTHS varsity baseball team were announced, with the MTHS varsity softball team receiving a special shout out since they were not in attendance, but playing in the Black and Gold Invitational against Hillsborough. The MTHS varsity softball team won that game 12-1. Mayor Matthew Kanye, and Township Committee members Rich Conklin and Frank Cooney were also in attendance, along with Board of Education President David Modrak and members Christine Fano and John Petrozzino.
Nick Marino thanked several individuals who have contributed positively to the MBSA. The first pitch was sponsored by Schumacher Chevy, who donated $1,000, and an additional $1,000 in equipment to the league. Softball player Emily Wollen alongside her uncle Anthony, Rich Conklin alongside his grandson Everett, and Nick Marino, alongside his grandfather Skip threw out the first pitches.
“I’d like to acknowledge Skip for his forty years of service to the MBSA,” Marino announced before the pitch.
Following the annual first pitch, all teams gathered in the infield for a group photo.
