1 dead after vehicle goes over cliff south of Pacifica

( KRON ) — One person was killed when a vehicle went off a cliff Thursday afternoon at Gray Whale Cove State Beach in Montara, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP reported a severe traffic alert and an injury crash on northbound and southbound Highway 1 south of Devil’s Slide. One way traffic control was in effect.

Firefighters reached the vehicle 200 feet down over the cliff. A CHP helicopter lowered one person onto the rocks where the vehicle landed. Multiple agencies are on the scene, according to Cal Fire.

The location is south of Pacifica and north of Moss Beach.

Traffic is expected to be impacted in both directions on Highway 1 for the next two or three hours. Authorities are asking drivers to give emergency vehicles room to operate. Motorists are advised to expect delays and use alternate route.

The estimated time for reopening both lanes of Highway 1 was 3:30 p.m., according to Cal Fire.
