High school football: Skyline gets big win over Highland in Region 10 clash
Skyline football was favored to win the Region 10 title in the preseason coaches poll, a nod that surprised even its new coach Brandon Matich at the time because Matich felt that honor should go to Highland until someone knocked off the reigning champion. The first-year Eagles coach and his team did just that Thursday night, and they did it on the Rams’ field with a strong 37-23 victory. It wasn’t an easy win in a game that got chippy and included a rarity of a safety by both teams, but Skyline stuck to its plan and limited Highland’s high-octane offense to pull out the victory. “I’m proud of these kids. They put in a lot of time, and this was a big moment for them,” Matich said. “Skyline has had a hard time getting over this Highland hump, and they were able to do it tonight.” The game really was an odd one to start, with the teams tied 9-9 with 10:42 left to play in the second quarter after Highland recorded a safety and a touchdown and then Skyline added a touchdown and a safety. For Highland, its score came after receiver Zamari Vaughn grabbed a 33-yard pass
