MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — BIO Girls, a program focused on teaching young girls the importance of having and cultivating self-worth, is returning to Minot for its seventh year.

BIO is an acronym that stands for beautiful inside and out. The group meets Tuesdays at 6 p.m. at Leach Park in Minot and is for girls in grades two through six.

During meetings, attendees learn life skills (such as how to prevent bullying and develop self-confidence), fill out a journal, and train for a 5k run at the end of the program with the aid of a mentor.

Throughout the history of BIO Girls, organizers say they have seen participants start in second grade, grow through sixth grade, and finally return to mentor new girls who join the program — which allows them to apply what they learn throughout the different stages of their lives and return to teach those same skills to others.

“We’ve been able to watch the girls go through all the years and use the tools,” said the program’s Codirector Lindsay Hoes. “Many of those girls have come back to be junior mentors and continue with us. It’s a very rewarding program that the girls enjoy and come back for.”

Registration for the BIO Girls program closes on Monday, May 20, but there are still several spots open.

To sign up, visit this page on the organization’s website. Leaders also add that even though BIO Girls has a full cost, partial scholarships are available to help pay for the program as well.
