The names of four Hennepin County Sheriff's deputies involved in a shootout that left a man dead in Minnetonka on Wednesday have been identified.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said Tuesday the deputies have been identified as Christopher Heihn, Tyler Jacob, Keith McNamara and Steven Tomasko. Heihn, Jacob and McNamara all fired their department-issued rifles, while Tomasko fired his department handgun.

Clint Hoyhtya , 28, was fatally shot by police after he fired at officers in front of a house on the 13400 block of East Crestwood Drive. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner said the 28-year-old died of "multiple gunshot wounds."

Authorities said the search warrant served at the residence wasn't for Hoyhtya, but for someone else that lives at the address. It's not clear what prompted Hoyhtya to open fire on police.

The deputies who fired during the exchange were:

  • Deputy Christopher Heihn: Eight years of law enforcement experience, fired department rifle.
  • Deputy Tyler Jacob: Eight years of law enforcement experience, fired department rifle.
  • Deputy Keith McNamara: 23 years of law enforcement experience, fired department rifle.
  • Deputy Steven Tomasko : 15 years of law enforcement experience, fired his department handgun.

Deputies Heihn and McNamara were injured in the shooting. McNamara as struck by shrapnel and was treated at the scene. Heihn was shot multiple times. He was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment and has since been released.

A preliminary investigation by the BCA states Hennepin County deputies went to a home to execute a search warrant for a man with multiple felonies.

After deputies knocked on the front door to announce themselves, Hoyhtya started shooting at them with an "assault-style rifle," the BCA said. The deputies returned fire, retreating back to set up a perimeter.

"Hoyhtya was wearing a tactical vest with ballistic plates during the shooting but was fatally struck by the deputies’ gunfire and died at the scene," the BCA said.

Officers from the Minnetonka and South Lake Minnetonka police departments later went to the address to assist after shots were fired.

The BCA is continuing to investigate the incident. Once it's completed, the agency will present its findings without a charging recommendation to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office for review.
