South Bend mayor touts racial equity progress; BLM rejects his premise
SOUTH BEND — Six months after the South Bend Reparatory Justice Commission’s report was filed with the clerk’s office, Mayor James Mueller said 32 of the 62 recommendations from the commission are in place or underway. That includes 32 of 38 recommendations Mueller identified as primarily under the city's control. “The gaps that the commission and report identified were not new. They weren’t necessarily unknown to anyone working in municipal government or those experiencing our city,” Mueller said. “The good new is a lot of work had already started before the commission even had been formed.” The South Bend Common Council formed the commission in September 2023 , giving its members the task of studying long-term effects of racism in the city and recommending policies to address them. Filed on May 4, the Reparatory Justice Commission’s final report highlighted decades of economic opportunity, housing, education and health disparities for Black residents in the city. Heartwood Commons project tabled for South Bend council discussion
SOUTH BEND — The South Bend Common Council tabled a bill associated with the Heartwood Commons project after public opposition and some council members raised the issue of transparency regarding brownfield land that the project seeks to develop. The council voted 6-3 on Monday, Oct. 12, to come back to the ordinance at the next council meeting, Oct. 26, to allow for more council discussion. Council President Canneth Lee voted no to the motion, as did council members Oliver Davis and Sherry Bolden-Simpson, who were asking for the bill to be heard again at the Nov. 9 meeting. "Any time that we deal with the contamination issues of brownfields," at-large council member Karen White said, "it takes some time to really have all the information that we need to make the level of decisions that will not only affect us from a different perspective, but most importantly, our citizens and children. "And so, just based on what I've heard this evening, and there's been some questions that have been shared once again, not only with the council, but also with administration, we do have some time that we can dig a little bit deeper, I think, to make sure that
