South Walton football shuts out FWB, improves to 2-0
FORT WALTON BEACH — South Walton's success won't be measured against the Gulf Breezes and Fort Walton Beaches, but by the Florida Highs and Pensacola Catholics. Even so, that doesn't make the Seahawks' 2-0 start and 85-0 margin of victory any less fun. Following a 50-0 season-opening win over Gulf Breeze at home, South Walton went into Steve Riggs Stadium Friday night and got two touchdown tosses from JD Brown, a pair of touchdown runs from Max Madden and watched its defense extend its scoreless streak to eight quarters in a 35-0 running-clock win over a Fort Walton Beach program that just hung 41 points on Pensacola High. Milestone win: Niceville routs West Florida, celebrates Adron Robinson's 1st coaching victory "Our goal is 10-0, that's the plan," linebacker and Rice commit Connor Rooney said. "We played hard and the defense takes pride in those zeros on the scoreboard. We're never going to look past anyone, and our focus shifts to Florida next week." South Walton's defense time and time again turned away scoring opportunities, including the opening drive where South Walton opted for the fake punt and gave up the ball up at its own 35 yard line. Week 2 predictions for high school football on Emerald Coast
Last week's predictions column was a mess. I had faith in the area teams that lost and underestimated the area teams that flexed on my way to a sad 4-6 week. For perspective, not once last year did I have a sub-.500 week. But variance happens, injuries happen, transfers happen. At least this week we're not flying in blind on what to expect. With that said, let's get to the picks and hopefully do better than last week. Week 1 HS football scores: FWB football lone Okaloosa team to begin 1-0; SoWal and Walton win Week 2 Predictions Freeport 49, North Bay Haven 7 Reasoning: The Bulldogs (0-1) won this match 54-13 last year, and they got better in the offseason. Don't overthink this one. Walton 35, Arnold 21 Reasoning: The Braves (1-0) are in the midst of a three-game homestand and coming off an impressive 52-7 win over West Florida, who beat Jay Lindsey's crew 35-6 last year. They've very clearly earned our trust, although Arnold (1-0) is coming off a 27-21 win over Freeport. Niceville 49, West Florida 0 Reasoning: After being held to seven points in the opener against a stacked Prattville team, expect the Eagles (0-1)
