Pensacola drops tough District 1-3A game to Bay without their coach
The elation Pensacola High’s football team experienced a week ago from a breakthrough rivalry win switched Friday night into the other end of the emotional spectrum. Playing without their head coach, Wade McKinney, suspended for one game by the Florida High School Athletic Association, the Tigers couldn’t thwart Panama City Bay on its final time-consuming drive, as the Tornadoes produced a touchdown with 38-seconds left for a 28-24 win at Jim Scoggins Stadium. Bay (5-1, 2-0 District 1-3A), now in the driver’s seat in District 1-3A, used an 11-play, 76-yard drive, capped by senior Kayden Turner’s 1-yard run for the game-deciding points. The Tornadoes got the ball with 6:02 left after PHS (2-4, 0-2 District 1-3A) lost a fumble at the Bay 26 while attempting a game-sealing drive. “It’s heartbreaking, the guys fought as hard as they could, but just couldn’t keep (Bay) out,” said assistant head coach Blake Atteberry, the PHS offensive coordinator who filled in for McKinney as head coach. Share your highlights with us for a chance to get in Plays of the Month McKinney was ejected in his team’s 27-24 victory Sept. 18 against Escambia High – the first win for PHS in 14 years over

Panama City pulls school zone speed cameras after 3,600 tickets
PANAMA CITY ― For now, local drivers will no longer receive automated tickets for speeding in school zones. In a Sept. 23 meeting, Panama City commissioners unanimously approved a motion to end the city's contract with RedSpeed and remove all of its automatic speed detection systems from local schools. This comes after thousands of drivers were ticketed over the past month. A news release from the city notes the decision was sparked by a recommendation from Chief Mark Smith of the Panama City Police Department, with support from City Manager Jonathan Hayes. The release alleged "repeated operational and administrative issues" with RedSpeed. “The Panama City Police Department has integrity, and we greatly care about preserving the trust that our citizens place in us,” Smith said in the release. “We continue to believe there is a very apparent speeding problem in our school zones, and we support efforts to address that problem. At the same time, we have to have confidence in the people and systems we rely upon to carry out enforcement on behalf of the City and our community." According to past reports, more than 3,600 tickets were mailed out since the 2026-2027 school year began in Bay County
