Maroon boys, Stephenson girls tops at Menominee Invitational

MENOMINEE — The Menominee boys and Stephenson girls track and field teams walked away victorious from the annual Menominee Invitational on Monday.

The Maroon boys captured first place with 96 points, edging Rapid Rapid (95) by one, and well ahead of third-place Stephenson, who finished 29 points.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Eagles soared to a team score of 91 points, good for first place. West Iron County (72.5) was second while the Lady Maroons (29) were third.

Kayela Putnam set the tone for the Stephenson girls with a first-place finish in the pole vault.

Putnam vaulted her way to a height of eight feet, six inches, more than two-and-half-feet higher than West Iron County’s Piper Prior, who finished second with a vault of 6’0”.

Putnam wasn’t the only Lady Eagle to snare first place in individual competition, as Caitlyn Johnson topped the field in the discus with a heave of 76’.

Menominee’s Erika Peterson also competed in the discus, finishing fourth with a toss of 62.9, before seizing top honors in the shot put, recording a throw of 28-2.5.

Mackenzi Pesola notched another first-place finish for the Lady Maroons in the long jump (14’ 10”), a mere one-foot better than Prior and teammate Richele Milostan, who tied for second with a leap of 13’ 10”.

Pesola also placed second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.15.

West Iron County’s Danica Shamion walked away with first place in the high jump (5’1”), with Stephenson’s Jada Kuntze (4’ 10”) in second place and Menominee’s Erin Schuettpeltz (4’ 10”) in third.

Shamion also sprinted her way to first place in the girls’ 200-meter run with a time of 28.22 seconds. Stephenson’s Adria Ruleau (31:00) settled for second while teammate Mattie Prestin crossed the finish line in third place with a time of 31:10.

Menominee’s 1,600-meter relay squad of Emily Schuettpeltz, Erin Schuettpeltz, Gianna Coduti and Lexi Marineau finished first after running a time of 4:31.36.

Coduti, Marineau and Erin Schueetpeltz then joined forces with Pesola to run away with first place in the 400-meter relay, posting a time of 56.32.

Marineau dashed her way to first place in the 300m hurdles with a time of 54.73.

Winley Brandt breezed past a pair of Stephenson runners to nab first in the 3,200-meter run, with Brandt recording a time of 14:09.06, while Kayela Putnam (14:49) and Gabriella Putnam (15:32.22) finished second and third, respectively.

Stephenson’s Faith Cappaert topped the field in both the 800-meter run (2:42.33) and the 1,600-meter run (5:58.00).

Back in boys’ action, Menominee’s Darrent Butler leapt to first place in both the long jump (17’ 3.5”), the high jump (5’ 6”).

Brayden Bourion, Dawson Bardowski, Landan Bardowski and Nathan Komp paired together to win the 1,600-meter relay in 3:59.24, while Stephenson’s team of Canon Kuntze, Ashton Grinsteiner, Oren Marcoe and Asher Priebe (4:05.40) was third.

Burion (5:07.91) dashed past Kuntze (5:20.49) to win the 1,600-meter run.

Komp finished first in the 200-meter dash, winning with a time of 25.12, the 100-meter dash (12.45) and the 400-meter dash (54.99).

Menominee’s Henry Zuehls continued the Maroons’ winning ways with a first-place time in the 800-meter run (2:20.98), while Zander Jurkiewicz won the 300m hurdles in 49.55.

Jurkiewicz also partook in the 100m hurdles and finished second with a time of 26.40.

Kuntze won the 3,200-meter run in 12:02.49.
