Kelley House Calendar: If these walls could talk
These photographs, taken about 50 years apart, show the Seagull Inn Bed & Breakfast on Albion Street between Lansing and Howard Streets in Mendocino. The building began as a family residence, constructed by Mendocino pioneer George Switzer in 1878. Born in Ontario, Canada, in 1839 to Christopher and Margaret (Buck) Switzer, George was raised on the family’s farm. He left for California at age 23, and after crossing the Isthmus of Panama on horseback, he made his way to Caspar. He found work in the Caspar sawmill, which William Kelley then owned.
Cue Tips: Focus on your game
I had no idea complaining about the overuse of powder around the new pool tables would create an uproar. Most people playing pool in Fort Bragg understand that using white powder carefully minimizes burying the pool table in dust. Everybody, it seems, dislikes the overuse of chalk. Most players are aware chalk dust slows a table. When playing a slow rolling shot, chalk buildup under the felt can be a reason for a ball to roll offline. Before playing, many players first brushed the pool table and felt free from white powder handprints and marks. When the game is over, you may need to brush the table again for the same reason: white powder handprints. Every brushing removes some felt from the table. Carbon fiber cue shafts do not need powder, and Pool gloves don’t need powder. Pool players only need a small spot of powder on their thumb and a finger or two that will never reach the tabletop. They need to be more careful and precise when applying it to themselves. Clapping your hands to remove the excess indicates that you overuse it.
