MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Shelby County deputies fatally shot a suspect accused of driving towards deputies Friday afternoon, sparking an investigation.

The shooting happened on Barron Avenue near Inman Road. According to Sheriff Floyd Bonner, deputies with the sheriff’s office SWAT team were serving a “high-risk” narcotics warrant in the area at 3:30 p.m.

Bonner says a man in a vehicle sped toward deputies as they approached. Deputies fired at the suspect, fatally shooting him.

Bonner says no deputies were injured in the shooting. Four people have been detained.

Lisa Mull says the suspect was her nephew. She came to the scene after hearing through gossip that her nephew was killed by Shelby County Sheriff’s deputies.

She says her son and brother are currently detained.

“My son and them don’t even know he’s supposed to be dead in that car,” Mull said. “They just in the back of the car not knowing what’s really supposed to be going on.”

Mull says she does crime prevention work for the Sheriff’s Office and has been begging her family to get away from this lifestyle for quite some time. But when asked to describe her family, one word immediately came to mind.

“Dangerous, for one. They loving, too,” Mull said. “They love each other as you can see, all of them together. One go down, all go down. That’s how they roll.”

The sheriff says several other suspects fled the scene. Investigators are working to identify those suspects.

Bonner says several “high-capacity” guns were found on the scene, including a handgun equipped with a Glock switch. Several drugs were also reportedly found on the scene.

The TBI is investigating the shooting.
