Numerous cars, first responder vehicles broken into on Mud Island, at fire station

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Overnight, more than a dozen vehicles were vandalized in areas across the city.
On Mud Island, four people were victims of smash and grab car break-ins with nothing being taken. But, things were different in Hickory Hill, as firefighters and paramedics were also targeted.
School supplies, a laptop, and several guns were stolen.
However, according to Memphis Police, the number of similar thefts is down. Already this year, there have been 2,070 reports of car break-ins.
At this point last year, there were 3,118 reported thefts from motor vehicles. That is a 33% decrease.
“Well you know when you walk out here, you’re just kind of shocked,” said Tyler Moran, a resident on Island Place. “Shocking, but they didn’t take anything. It’s obvious they are just looking for guns, but it’s shocking and its kind of aggravating.”
Moran says he and his wife just moved to the area, and this is not the show of hospitality they were expecting.
“She called me and said, ‘Hey your truck got broken into.’ I work from home, so I stormed down here, looked, and found all of this,” he said.
Moran says he is reconsidering and rethinking where he and his wife will now park their vehicles. Unfortunately, those in this area were not the only ones targeted overnight.
Crew members at fire station 55 in Hickory Hill were hit. Those tasked with helping others during an emergency had to call for help themselves, as more than half a dozen vehicles were vandalized.
Nine vehicles belonging to firefighters and paramedics were hit.
Detectives say the thieves cut through the bordering fence to gain access, where they found, and stole three guns. They fled the scene before police arrived.
So far, no one has been arrested for the rash of car break-ins, however, police are still looking over surveillance video, with hopes it will aid detectives in their investigation.
