MPD to honor fallen officer with Sea of Blue on Sunday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Police Department will honor an officer killed in the line of duty with a Sea of Blue this weekend.

Officer Joseph “Rusty” McKinney, 26, was killed in a shootout last Friday off Horn Lake Road. He joined the force in 2020.

Officers will conduct the Sea of Blue starting at 7:45 Sunday evening at Southland Mall. The route, shown in a map below, starts in Whitehaven, winds through the Westhaven area, and ends on Raines Road.

McKinney will be laid to rest the next day at Memorial Park following a service at Hope Church in Cordova.

The shootout also killed one suspect, 18-year-old Jaylen Lobley, and sent a 17-year-old suspect to the hospital. Two more officers also were injured.
