Desert dust from southwest brings brown rain to the D.C. area

Did you wake up Saturday to find your car covered in what looked like dried muddy rain? The National Weather Service has an explanation: desert dust from more than 1,000 miles away. "The southwest ... has been experiencing dust storms this week due to strong winds from various weather systems moving through," the NWS Wakefield forecast office said in a social media post this weekend. The dust, traveling from northern Chihuahua, Mexico, southern New Mexico and far west Texas, was ingested into a low pressure system as it moved across the Plains and off to the east Friday. As the dust wrapped up into the storm system, it made it to the ground as rain falling along areas of the East Coast, including Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina. The weather service said the dusty rain phenomena has happened before. "When a strong system creates thick blowing dust and then strengthens as it moves E/NE, it has created 'brown snow' across Colorado and the Great Lakes region before," the NWS said.
