PG&E warns of new power shutoffs in 7 Northern CA counties. See areas at risk

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. is warning that more than 600 customers in seven Northern California counties could lose electricity beginning Friday evening as strong, dry winds raise wildfire concerns, less than a week after widespread shutoffs left tens of thousands without power. The potential public safety power shutoffs could affect 644 customers in portions of Butte, Lake, Napa, Shasta, Solano, Sonoma and Yolo counties, according to PG&E’s latest estimates. But the possible outages are narrowly targeted, with the utility’s maps showing small, scattered areas in the northern Sierra Nevada foothills and remote sections of the Coast Ranges. In Butte County, possible shutoffs are concentrated east of Paradise and Magalia, around the Concow area. In Shasta County, the areas under consideration follow portions of the Highway 299 corridor near Round Mountain and Montgomery Creek. Closer to Sacramento, only small pockets of western Yolo County and Solano County near the Napa County line are at risk. The maps do not show potential shutoffs in Sacramento, Woodland, Davis or West Sacramento. PG&E placed portions of all seven counties under a PSPS watch for Friday and Saturday, meaning outages were considered likely because of forecast high winds and dry conditions. The utility said

When moving to California in June to cover food and agriculture for The Sacramento Bee, one of the people I wanted to meet was Dolores Huerta . I knew she was an important figure in the history of California, and in U.S. history, because of her lifetime of devotion to the farmworker movement. Huerta, who died Wednesday at 96, helped build the United Farm Workers union into a nationally recognized organization. That work, her work, shined a light on the deplorable conditions experienced by the workers harvesting our food in California. My first opportunity to meet her, and what turned out to be my last, came when I was invited to an August news conference in Sacramento about pesticide regulation. Huerta would be speaking at the event. Dozens of advocates and farmworkers gathered in front of the Capitol and chanted “Sí, se puede,” or “Yes, we can,” a phrase coined by Huerta. She was the oldest person at the gathering, and also the most revered. Attendees were eager to speak to her and take photos with her. Shortly after the news conference, she was whisked away by her daughter, Juanita Chavez. Chavez’s father was Richard Chavez, Cesar Chavez’s brother. The
