Under the orchard lights. Farm-to-table dinners celebrate a taste of Appalachia
There's a place outside Somerset that used to be just an empty hayfield. Now more than 12 years later, a metamorphosis has turned it into an enchanted orchard with twinkling lights, a terrace of fruit trees and flowers and a place to share dinner with your loved ones. Fern Hollow Farm, co-owned by husband and wife Erik Peterson and Olivia Miller-Peterson, is what's called a permaculture farm and event venue, meant to emulate Appalachian ecosystems. It was born out of four generations of farmers, and it more recently introduced a dinner series that uses locally sourced ingredients, some as close as an arm's reach away. "The joy of eating food that is ripened at that moment. It's the freshest. It's the tastiest. It's the peak flavor, peak nutrition," Olivia said. "We're surrounded by all of these wonderful farms and farmers, and really just eating some of the best food. It was just born out of that. We can eat really well here, and we can really celebrate Perry County, celebrate Appalachia in this way." "We think it's important to cultivate closeness, intimacy with the dining experience," Erik added. "It's quiet out here. It's peaceful. So, for me, it's not just

Mid-Ohio Valley Climate Corner: In Ohio, renewably sourced electricity can be an affordable choice
Most of the time I am grateful to live in Ohio. Ohio is one of only 13 states that allow consumers to choose their electricity supplier, and one of only 9 states to allow municipal energy aggregation. The city of Marietta, for example, is able to negotiate with electricity suppliers to get a good, fixed-rate deal for AEP customers within city limits. AEP owns and manages the grid in southeastern Ohio, and supplies electricity to those who don't designate an alternative supplier. AEP's standard service option (SSO) rate per kWh is 10.97 cents from July 1 through Sept. 30, 2026, and the City of Marietta's aggregated electricity rate from October 2025 through December 2026 is 9.86 cents per kWh.

FRAZEYSBURG – Farmland just outside Frazeysburg recently found a new owner after a decade on the market. The Frazeysburg Land Company, created in April 2025 as an affiliate of the New Albany Company, recently closed on the purchase of 217 acres wedged between Frazeysburg, Black Run Road and Ohio 16, confirmed a company spokesperson Sept. 21. It's part of 664 acres within the area that it either owns or controls, they added. However, the company doesn't have any further details or any immediate development plans to announce, the spokesperson added. The Muskingum County Auditor's Office told the Times Recorder of two recent conveyances from Sept. 16 between the Frazeysburg Land Company and G&G Land Holdings II, the latter of which owns much of the land directly between Black Run Road and Frazeysburg. One transfer was for two parcels totaling 61.9 acres and $1.4 million, and the other was for six parcels totaling 155.3 acres and $11.85 million. The auditor's website also notes a transfer from Aug. 13 from the Mount Perry Land Company to the Frazeysburg Land Company for $999,000. It was for a 10-acre parcel along Black Run Road. It was previously transferred from G&G Land Holdings (not G&G
