St. Lawrence County holds Overdose Prevention Pop-Up Event on April 17

CANTON, N.Y. (WWTI) – The St. Lawrence County Public Health Department, in a collaboration with the Seaway Valley Prevention Council will hold an Overdose Prevention Pop-Up Event on Wednesday, April 17 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 56-58 Main Street, Massena, NY

This event will educate the public on the dangers of drug overdose and the importance of prevention and will provide the following items for free to the community:

  • Narcan (naloxone)
  • Fentanyl test strips
  • Xylazine test strips
  • Other resources and educational materials

According to the CDC, 106,699 drug overdose deaths occurred in the United States in 2021 , for every drug overdose that results in death, there are several more nonfatal overdoses. Although synthetic opioids are currently the main reason for overdose deaths, deaths involving drugs with and without synthetic opioids are increasing.

You can reduce your risk and harm by:

  • Testing your supply with test strips for Fentanyl and Xylazine;
  • Avoid using alone, and if you do, call the Never Use Alone Hotline at 800-484-3731 to have an operator stand by while you use;
  • Have an overdose plan; and
  • Carry Narcan (naloxone).
