David Beck’s Tejano Weekend is set to take the Duett’s stage in Martindale on April 20 in what the band hopes to become an annual thing.

“We wanted to give back and do one big party for this year,” David Beck, the band’s lead singer, said. “We needed to take some time off, so we thought there wasn’t a better place for a comeback than Martindale.”

All five members of Tejano Weekend — Beck, Dees Stribling, David Herrera, John Saucedo and Peter Huysman — are natives of the Lone Star State, bringing their love for guitars, accordions, bajo sexto, percussion and keys to the forefront of their music. The result blends the genres of Tejano, folk, country and America to create a purely Texas sound.

And Duett’s Texas Club is precisely the venue to showcase it. Located at 420 Main Street in Martindale, Duett’s finds its home on the lower level of what once housed the Martindale Motor Company. Several years ago, the music scene in Martindale began to set down roots when the Martindale River Cafe began to bring shows downtown.

“I think it was just a way for a lot of people in the community to get to hang out with each other. Once that web starts forming, all the good things come after,” Beck said. “There’s a lot of good musicians that live in Martindale.”

As more musicians trickled in, the need for a larger site with a robust sound system became a necessity.

“It’s a proper music venue,” Beck said. “My buddies run Duett’s so it’s the perfect place for live music. It’s going to be a great time.”

Opening for Tejano Weekend is Los Juanos, a San Antonio Tejano band made up of indie rockers who — like Beck and fellow Weekend members — embrace traditional Spanish music while adding their own heart and soul into the mix.

“They sing mostly Spanish, but they do some English songs, too,” Beck said. “They’re really good, smart, cool people.”

Doors open at 7 p.m. on April 20 at Duett’s with Los Juanos opening and David Beck’s Tejano Weekend taking the stage around 8:30 p.m..
