Marshall’s promising start to the 2024 high school track & field season continued on Thursday, April 25. The Cardinals made the trip to Mayville High School on that day to compete in the nine-team Marshland Invitational. Much like their meets early in the season, the Cardinals performed very well.

Both the girls and boys took first place in the team scoring. The girls took the top spot with a score of 152, outpacing host Mayville in second with 141 and Fall River in third at 94. The boys ran away with the event with a team score of 221, far outpacing Fall River in second with 102. Host Mayville rounded out the top three with 89 team points.

The boys took first place in seven separate events, including both of the longer relays. Senior Caden Norquay helped out in both. He ran the first leg of the 4x400 meter relay, followed by fellow senior Jaxon Hornby and juniors Brady Stensven and Max Timpel, to win with a time of 3:48.48. He was the closer in the 4x800 meter relay. Senior Miles Zimmerman, sophomore Drew Chadwick, and senior Huston Siedschlag ran before him for a first place time of 9:40.76.

Norquay, Hornby, and Stensven would also go on to claim individual wins. Norquay won the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 45.92 seconds. Hornby claimed the top spot in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 4:49.90. Stensven put up a leap of 46’6.25” in the triple jump for another first place finish.

Like Stensven, the boys’ other two first place finishers came in the field portion of the event. Senior Tucker Cobb won the pole vault with a height of 12 and a half feet. Junior Daniel Nickel put up a 6’2” on the high jump for the top spot, as well.

Marshall’s impressive scoring didn’t end there as eight more Cardinals finished runner-up in their respective events. Nickel and Stensven dominated the jumping events. While Stensven won the triple jump, Nickel finished runner-up with a distance of 38’2”. Behind Nickel in the high jump was Stensven at 5’10”. Senior Peyton Gundelach also had a great day of throwing, finishing second in both the discus (113’11”) and shot put (40’8.5”).

Back on the track, the boys also nabbed second place in the 4x100 meter relay. Freshman Jayden Young, senior Brayden Klubertanz, junior Jose Ayala-Santacruz, and sophomore Carter Pettit ran the event in a time of 46.36 seconds.

Individually, sophomore Jackson Reichelt finished second in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 18.03 seconds, junior Max Timpel was runner-up in the 400 meter dash with a time of 54.53 seconds, and fellow junior Fernando Campos ran a time of 24.53 seconds for second in the 200 meter dash.

As for the girls, Marshall put up five first place finishes. Three of them came from senior Wynn Held. She opened by winning the 100 meter dash with a time of 14.17 seconds and also jumped eight feet flat to win the pole vault. Held also ran the anchor leg of the first place 4x200 meter relay. She was joined by seniors Lizet Lopez-Montes and Sydney Denniston as well as junior Ciara Dowdy to put up a winning time of 1:59.02.

The remaining two first place finishes were split between the track and field. Junior Alexandra Moreth gave Marshall one in the discus throw as her toss of 105’6” earned her the top spot. Freshman Tori Justmann also raced to a time of 6:04.64 to win the 1,600 meter run.

Justmann would go on to help provide two runner-up finishes, as well. She achieved a height of 4’4” in the high jump for second place and also ran the final leg of the 4x800 meter relay. Junior Emma Hellenbrand and sophomores Paige Hill and Madalyn Weyh ran before her to help put up a time of 11:55.56.

Hellenbrand also finished second behind Justmann in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 6:19.47. Other notable finishes from the girls includes third place in both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays, Lopez-Montes’ second place finish in the pole vault, and Dowdy’s third place finish in the triple jump.

This strong invitational performance came on the heels of Marshall’s first home meet of the 2024 season. The Cardinals welcomed in Sugar River and Cambridge on Tuesday, April 23 for a Capitol Conference triangular.

The boys relay teams dominated the day, taking first place in the 4x100, 4x400, and 4x800 meter relays. Additionally, senior Huston Siedschlag won the 3,200 meter run (11:31.26), Gundelach won the discus toss (118’3”), and Stensven won the triple jump (43’6.25”).

The girls found boatloads of success in the field, too. Freshman Summer Hellenbrand won the shot put with a toss of 30’4.5”, Moreth claimed top spot in the discus with a throw of 101’6”, and Held won the pole vault at eight feet flat. Held would also take first in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.89 seconds. Marshall’s final first place finish came courtesy of sophomore Keira Hellenbrand, who won the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:07.82.

Next on the schedule for Marshall is the Deerfield Classic Invitational, hosted on Friday, May 3. This is the lone meet separating the Cardinals from hosting their own annual tradition, the Dana Waddell Invitational. It will take place at Marshall High School on Wednesday, May 8.
