SMSU baseball rolls past Northern State for sweep

MARSHALL, MN (NORTHERN) – The Northern State University baseball team dropped both games, 5-3 and 16-1 against Southwest Minnesota State. Explosive innings from the Mustangs kept the win out of reach from the Wolves in both games. NSU tallied four runs off of 13 hits on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 1

  • Northern State was the first to score on the day as Karson Hesser knocked an infield single that scored Michael Benevides in the top of the first
  • After a scoreless second inning, Nicholas Ochoa drove one over the right field fence for a solo homerun  to lead by two
  • Southwest Minnesota State cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice hit
  • The Mustangs took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with four runs
  • In the top of the seventh inning, Jack Weidner drove the ball up the middle for a single that scored Brennan Phillips to trail by two runs
  • The Wolves tallied three runs off of nine hits with two errors in the contest
  • Jack Miller recorded the loss in 0.1 innings pitched

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 2

  • Southwest Minnesota State was the first to score with nine runs in the bottom of the first
  • Northern State chipped away from the deficit as Brennan Phillips singled through the left side that scored Nicholas Ochoa
  • In the fourth and fifth inning, SMSU recorded seven runs to lead by 15 runs
  • The Wolves tallied one run off of four hits with one error
  • Jake Helleloid recorded the loss in 0.1 innings pitched

Northern State returns home to take one Bemidji Stat in a three game series. The first two games are set for Saturday, April 20 at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. with the final game on Sunday, April 21 at 12 p.m. from Fossum Field.
