Ohio school district suspends non-varsity sports after tax levy fails

Getting out to vote matters. That's a lesson an Ohio school district is learning in the wake of the 2026 midterm elections. According to the Columbus Dispatch — part of the USA TODAY Network — Pickerington Local Schools is suspending all non-varsity athletics and other extracurriculars. This comes after a 0.75% income tax levy proposal in Fairfield and Franklin counties failed, according to unofficial election results. The vote failed by just around 250 votes, which is less than 1% of all the votes cast. Superintendent Charles Smialek told parents in a letter that all athletic teams below the varsity level and other extracurricular activities have been suspended, effective on Wednesday, Nov. 4, while other activities — including musicals and theater — will continue through Dec. 31. Smialek told The Dispatch that "the district needed to protect academics in the classroom, and hard decisions needed to be made," and the move would be a "short-term proposition." According to The Dispatch, the district faces a $21 million deficit, based on the figures presented to the board. "We understand the value of extracurriculars, we understand the experiences they create. It's difficult," Smialek told The Dispatch. "These are among the harder decisions most of

Aurora HS grad and KSU pre-med student has 'had quite the journey'

Considering the medical issues she has faced over the last few years, Cassidy Trem could be forgiven for wanting to take it easy. Instead, the Aurora High School graduate, when she isn't engaged in her premed studies at Kent State University, is running marathons. "I have had quite the journey," said Trem. After a long recovery from a serious traffic accident, she ran the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon while a high school senior in October 2023. And just a couple of months after undergoing the last of three surgeries for a medical condition unrelated to the crash, she ran the Barcelona Marathon in Spain this past March. And to top it off, Trem is preparing to run in the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon on Nov. 7 after recovering from a recent outpatient procedure related to that condition. Trem says that she is determined to fight through her various issues, but admits that at times she has wondered about her various trials. "I just can't believe these things keep happening to me," she said. In connection with the Indianapolis marathon, Trem is fundraising for Ketchup to Cancer , a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2025 by Alex Baker, who began running

Schools struggle for funding as more ballot items fail

School districts in Central Ohio and elsewhere across the state struggled to convince voters to approve new sources of funding in the recent election and now face difficult financial decisions. Why it matters: Districts are increasingly reliant on funding sources like property and income taxes — additional expenses that many financially strapped voters said were too much to bear this election. The latest: Of 134 statewide ballot issues tracked by the Ohio School Boards Association for the Nov. 3 ballot, just over half passed. Zoom in: Voters in a dozen Central Ohio districts faced levies or bonds, and only four were approved or are on track to pass. South-Western City Schools was the only successful issue in Franklin County — its bond issue didn't increase taxes and passed with 66% of the vote. Issues for Jefferson and Miami Trace lead by small margins, while the Delaware Area Career Center also passed. Threat level: Chillicothe, Mount Vernon, Pickerington and Southwest Licking have now experienced multiple failed issues in a row. Pickerington's board president says the district faces deep cuts. Southwest Licking's superintendent says cuts could be "catastrophic." Between the lines: Funding from ballot issues has become critical for districts amid reduced
