Historical training school opens for first public walkthrough
For the first time in decades, the Emporia-Greensville community got to visit one of its most historically significant monuments. The Greensville County Training School opened its, albeit figurative, doors on Saturday afternoon for the first public walkthrough since the building fell into disrepair in the 1970s.
City honors sign maker for long-term service to Emporia
The Emporia City Council lauded the achievements of a local business owner and dedicated citizen during their regular meeting on June 4. Born on October 12, 1944, Melvin Ogburn is a lifelong resident of Emporia. He served four years in the United States Navy after graduating high school before returning home where he married Clara Allen. The two lived happily in Emporia for 49 years until her passing in 2015.
Chesson honored for 24 years on commission
Douglas Chesson was recognized by the Southampton County Board of Supervisors on May 28 with a resolution of appreciation for his 24 years of service on the county’s Planning Commission. The Greensville/Emporia Department of Social Services Administrative Board will hold its regular meetings at the Greensville/Emporia Department of Social Services located at 1100 Greensville County Circle, Emporia, VA 23847. The meeting will be held at 3:30 p.m. on the 3rd Thursday of each month. Please contact the agency at 434-634-6576 if further information is needed.
GCPS receives federal awards for 2024-25 school year
Greensville County public schools have received federal funding for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. Dr. Janaire Robinson, federal grants coordinator at GCPS, explained some of the awards to the school board on June 10.
