NIC-10 baseball race takes dramatic turn in last game with walk-off win after trailing 9-1
Belvidere North harbored NIC-10 title hopes three weeks ago. Five straight losses crushed that dream. Yet here the Blue Thunder were, storming the field after Lukas Koeller’s bases-loaded triple gave North a walk-off 12-11 win over Boylan on Thursday. The win won’t help North (13-13, 11-7 NIC-10) in the...

Hononegah's girls softball crew, one of the youngest in the NIC-10 and in the Rockford area, had plenty of motivation going into Wednesday night's showdown at Belvidere North. Win to complete the season sweep of the Blue Thunder and another conference title was theirs. It would also set up a...

Crystal Lake RV News: Summer Activities Begin At Crystal Lake Village
The weather is getting warmer which means the “Summer Fun” committee is kicking into gear. Our first event for the summer was a Ladies Luncheon organized by Martha Satterlee (where we also invited men to come – just sit at a different table). We had 14 ladies and 2 gentlemen attend. We chose Woody’s Barbeque for our first outing to support a new local business and a great time was had by all. Everyone loved their lunch and some great conversations.
Some friendly competition
Sun’s out and we are headed into outdoor season. With eighty-degree weather coming this early, that spring fever has been blasted into overdrive. The old joke persists that Chicagoland residents don’t have more than two seasons. And upon the drive to work, men in hard hats and caution lights block the roadways. While sitting in traffic, I could see some local tennis courts filled with would-be athletes practicing. I remember getting my racket and friends to do just the same. But I never had the same fervor as others. Certainly not like the characters we find in Challengers.
Baseball Game Preview: Fremd Heads Out
Fremd has enjoyed a three-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will take on the Huntley Red Raiders at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Fremd lost 12-2 to Cary-Grove on Tuesday. Fremd has not had much luck with Cary-Grove recently, as the team's come up short the last six times they've met.
Belvidere School District 100 may close Perry Elementary School
Belvidere parents and students sing an ode to Perry Elementary School as they stand outside of its 127-year-old walls, waiting to go inside to demand the school board keep the school open. Young students hold up “Save Perry” and “Please don’t close my school” signs.
Eulogy for a good old tree
It’s hard to say if a hummingbird is mourning just by the look on its face, but I think the hummers in my yard this spring are sad about the changes in their neighborhood. That’s because their favorite resting spot, the old purple cherry plum tree in my yard, is gone. It blew down on one of those blustery days in late April, just before the hummers got back in town.
As fentanyl-laced drugs kill thousands of Americans, should dealers be charged with murder?
Potent and deadly street drugs, most laced with fentanyl, continue to kill Americans at staggering rates. Should prosecutors be able to charge dealers with murder for those deaths?
