Giant Days brings back fan favorites for 39th year
Excitement for the 39th annual Giant Days celebration is growing as Le Sueur’s signature festival returns with fan-favorite activities like the Minn-E-Rods tractor pull, all-you-can-eat corn feed and the 5k run. In place of the usual teen night, the Le Sueur Lions Club is sponsoring a Family Fun Night to kick off Giant Days on Thursday, July 30 at American Legion Park. Rather than a dance this year, dfom 7-10:30 p.m. the night will feature bingo, chalk, a scavenger hunt and a movie showing. The first full day of festivities starts at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1. The park will feature a variety of food and drink vendors and bounce houses from Awesome Fiesta Jumpers. In an event that’s sure to get motors running, the Minn-E-Rods tractor pull will rip down the Legion Park track from 6-8 p.m. Then, audiences can catch all the country, rock and pop hits being performed live on the Agropur stage at 9 p.m. by IV Play. The festival opens bright and early at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2 with Bloody Mary’s and mimosas presented by the Giant Days Committee. 34th Annual Minnesota State Pork Masters Golf Outing Teed Off Today (Monday)
FAIRMONT — Despite the heat there were plenty of golfers on hand at Interlaken Golf Club in Fairmont for the 34th Annual Pork Masters Golf Outing. The event teed off Monday morning but it got its start in 1992 through a partnership between the Martin County Pork Producers, local agribusinesses, and the Fairmont Area Chamber of Commerce. At the beginning they hoped to create a networking opportunity for pork producers and the agricultural industry and since the first event it has grown exponentially. Proceeds from the annual outing stay in the community, helping fund agriculture scholarships and pork promotion efforts. The tournament continues to attract golfers and sponsors from across Minnesota and neighboring states each year.

Pioneering Minnesota seedswomen featured in library exhibit
IF CARRIE LIPPINCOTT, Emma White and Jessie Prior toured Buckham Memorial Library in Faribault, I expect they would appreciate not only what’s inside the library, but also outside. They were, after all, pioneering Minnesota businesswomen who ran successful seed companies at the turn of the 20th century. The trio...

Northfield's Vintage Band Festival will be bigger than ever as it turns 20
It started with a daydream. Paul Niemisto was sitting in a lecture hall in Oberwolz, Austria, when his eyes drifted to the window. Outside was a river, quaint Styrian buildings, the kind of scene that sticks with you. And it did. “I began thinking of my own quaint village with its river,” Niemisto said. Back in Northfield that same year, a group of self-described “graybeards and curmudgeons” would gather at the Contented Cow and ask a question that had no answer: “Why isn’t there an outdoor music festival in this town?” Niemisto sat listening. The question from the pub and the view from the Austrian window collided in his head and became the Vintage Band Festival. “It was meant to be a one-time-only occasion,” Niemisto said. That was 2006. Twenty years later, the Vintage Band Festival returns with 30 bands across four full days of musical time travel. The performances include two international acts, a bike parade and a fireworks show honoring America’s 250th birthday. The festival takes place on two stages next Thursday through Sunday at Bridge Square and Central Park, with additional performances at the Grand Event Center, three senior facilities, the public library, Imminent Brewing, Loon Liquor,

MOMFest beats the heat with breakout concert series
If there was one thing hotter than the 10-day heat wave hitting St. Peter, it was the sounds at the Minnesota Original Music Festival. Despite hot and humid temperatures over the weekend, organizers reported the 5th annual festival had one of the event’s most robust crowds yet. “You can tell by the people that have filled up the park, there’s some excitement and enthusiasm about the musicians,” said MOMFest Organizer Eli Hoehn. “It started out on a high note and it’s gotten a little bit higher as we’ve had each musician cross the stage there.” The weekend-long festivities spotlighting and fostering the creation of original music kicked off on Thursday with the 48-Hour Band Challenge Draft. The event, which has birthed local acts like The Quantum Mechanics and Lady Mercury, assigns participants into randomly selected bands that have never played with each other before. From there, the bands had just two days to create a setlist of three songs themed around a particular artist. The part is simple: playing a song in the style of the artist who first performed it. The challenge escalates as the band must cover a song from another musician in that original artist’s style. The
