You can make adorable mini-bouquets at new Bloom Bar near Howell
A local crafter has expanded into Kensington Valley Outlets with her very own "Bloom Bar" at Mi Unique Art. Crystal Coulter, of Highland, is the owner of Crystal Makes The Things , a small business that can be found at craft shows and, now, in stores in Howell and Highland. Coulter has been a crafter since childhood, often making elaborate gifts for her family for Christmas. As she made her way into adulthood, including four years in the United States Air Force, she never lost her interest in creative arts. Coulter launched Crystal Makes The Things in 2024. At the time, she focused on selling magnets. By early 2025, she started making her booths more interactive, with do-it-yourself pens and keychains. Most recently, she's created "Bloom Bars," an interactive station where customers can choose between pre-made beaded flowers to make their own mini-bouquets. According to Coulter, watching customers get creative has been the best part of Bloom Bars. More: Kaleidoscope is moving to a more open floor plan at Kensington Valley “I just love seeing people get excited about being able to make their own things,” she told The Daily. A Walk in the Park: Lansing’s Hunters Ridge Park has trails, river views
A Walk in the Park is an ongoing series from State Journal photographer Nick King, who intends to explore Lansing area parks one hour at a time. If you have a suggestion of a park he should visit, email him at nking@lsj.com. Lansing’s Hunters Ridge Park offers visitors a place of rustic, natural beauty along the Grand River within the city limits. Located at 4000 Hunters Ridge Dr., the park features rolling hills and a forest of thick trees. Its unpaved natural trails wind through the woods, offering glimpses of local wildlife, including deer and various bird species, along with scenic views of the Grand River. For biking enthusiasts, Hunters Ridge Park serves as the northern starting point of the West Lansing Trails mountain bike system. Beginning at Hunters Ridge, the continuous trail network connects south to Fulton Park before ending at Fine Park. The entire three-park loop stretches over 7 miles long. The park includes a parking lot for visitors. Leashed dogs are welcome, and there are no public bathrooms on site. Flap Jack Shack in limbo as Auto-Owners Insurance fights fire claim
LANSING TWP. — The owner of the Flap Jack Shack that has been closed since an April fire said the popular restaurant won't open until at least the end of February, and likely longer, because of a dispute with Auto-Owners Insurance. Owner Jozef Gjonaj said the conflict centers on who is responsible for repairs in the event of an insurance claim for the interior of the building at 3000 E. Grand River Avenue, he or building owner Sam Edye Management Co. Gjonaj leases the space from Eyde and was insured through Auto-Owners. Gjonaj said he's provided ample proof to Lansing-based Auto-Owners, including a lease agreement, that his company J&G Restaurant, Inc. is responsible for all interior repairs at the restaurant. Auto-Owners received a June 25 insurance claim for the interior damages of approximately $2.2 million, according to documents provided to the State Journal by Jeff Moss. Moss, from JML Adjusting Services in West Bloomfield, works as an adjuster for residential or commercial property owners to help them with their claims to their insurance companies. The company disputes that Gjonaj is responsible for the damage, despite receiving a copy of his lease and two letters from Sam Eyde Management Co., the

There's a new gourmet sandwich shop in Brighton — and it slaps
"Livingston In Photos," a series shot by reporter Makayla Coffee, highlights the extra-ordinary happenings of your neighbors. BRIGHTON — A new carryout restaurant offers mouthwatering, gourmet sandwiches in downtown Brighton. For this week's Livingston in Photos, I visited The Oregano Deli and Specialty Market at 132 W. Main St. The business held a grand opening celebration Sept. 24. According to owner Brandon Shouneyia, the shop's menu is something he spent plenty of time cultivating. The finished product includes 10 sandwiches served on fresh-baked schiacciata bread, wraps and salads. Shouneyia prides himself on using quality lunch meat that sets his sandwiches apart, in addition to housemade salad dressings. More: There's a new carryout sandwich and specialty shop coming to Brighton So far, the favorite for customers has been the shop's namesake — The Oregano — packed with meats like salami, parma ham, capocollo and mortadella, according to Shouneyia. Looking for a more unconventional option? Consider the F&R or Pistachio. The F&R also has parma ham, plus whipped ricotta, fig jam and arugula. The Pistachio is made with pistachio mortadella, stracciatella, arugula and pistachio pesto. Cannoli and soups are coming to the menu soon, as well as possible menu tweaks in January,

There's a nostalgic arcade opening in the former Castaway Play Cafe
A local arcade focused on nostalgia and family fun will soon open a "massive" second location in the former Castaway Play Cafe. The Arcade — Howell is coming to 1800 N. Burkhart Road, business owner Mike Magyari confirmed with The Daily. Assuming electrical work proceeds on schedule, he hopes to open in December. Castaway Play Cafe closed for "big changes" in August. The business was known for laser tag, a jungle gym and arcade, and bounce houses. The Arcade — Howell will be "massive" compared to an existing location at 10816 Grand River Ave. in Brighton, with around 600 machines. The entertainment center will have everything from pinball to classic games from the '80s and '90s. Of note, the business doesn't have any "redemption" games, according to a comment from ownership on social media. Customers pay a daily admission fee for unlimited play, with no tickets issued. Magyari said he spent years searching for a larger location without success. After selling arcade games to Castaway Play Cafe, he eventually worked out a deal with owner Dwayne Combs. More: Castaway Play Café is temporarily closing for 'big changes' Magyari is leasing about two-thirds of the building, excluding the area used for
