Elk River community finds ways to honor, support veterans

Elk River has a long tradition of recognizing and supporting its veterans. From Veterans Day programs at local schools to the work of the Elk River Beyond the Yellow Ribbon organization, community members make sure those who have served are not forgotten. This week offers several more opportunities to show that appreciation, including a fundraiser to benefit local military families , two dinners honoring area veterans and a showcase celebrating veteran-owned businesses hosted by the Elk River Area Chamber of Commerce. Here's a look at each event. Aegir fundraiser to benefit BTYR Beyond the Yellow Ribbon of Elk River will host a fundraiser Saturday, Nov. 7, from 2 to 8 p.m. at Aegir Brewing Company, 19050 Industrial Blvd. NW, Elk River. The event will feature games, a silent auction, bingo, a 50/50 raffle and an opportunity to watch the Army vs. Air Force football game. Proceeds will go directly toward supporting local military members, veterans and their families. The silent auction and other activities will be available throughout the afternoon. Royalton starts the day with a 12:30 p.m. kickoff up in Fargo, North Dakota, at North Dakota State's Fargodome for the Section 6AA championship against Osakis. The Royals beat the Silverstreaks in a thrilling Week 6 overtime win, and with a win today, they would enter the state tournament for the first time since 2008. In the Section 5AA and 5AAA games, Kimball and Foley each look to avenge regular-season losses against mighty unbeaten teams for a state tournament berth. Kimball takes on Redwood Valley, which beat them 38-18 on Oct. 9, while Foley draws Annandale, which beat the Falcons 41-7 in Week 3. Farber, Michels win Zimmerman council seats; 13-vote margin could lead to recount

Larry Farber and Karen Michels will fill two seats on the Zimmerman City Council, but the outcome of the second seat could face another review after Michels edged Dave Earenfight by just 13 votes. According to the reported results, Farber led the three-candidate field with 1,144 votes, or 33.70%. Michels received 1,113 votes (32.78%), while Earenfight finished with 1,100 votes (32.40%). There were 38 write-in votes. All eight precincts reported, with 100% of precincts reporting in the results posted by the Minnesota Secretary of State. The city is reviewing Minnesota’s election recount provisions to determine whether the 13-vote margin qualifies for a publicly funded recount. According to the Sherburne County Auditor/Treasurer, to have a publicly funded recount the difference must be less than one-quarter of 1 percent of the total votes counted for that office. “There were 3,395 votes cast for this office,” Zimmerman City Clerk Kary Tillman said. “If the math is correct, .25% would be less than 8 votes for a publicly funded recount of the Zimmerman City Council election.” Under that interpretation, a recount requested by a candidate would be considered discretionary and would have to be requested in writing and funded by the candidate. HAM LAKE, Minn. — Runners from across the St. Cloud area congregated at Majestic Oaks Golf Club to compete in the MSHSL State Cross Country Championships Saturday, Nov. 7, and did not disappoint. Class A - Girls Margaret Duffy was the headliner in Class A, running a personal best 17:25.2 to defend her individual state championship and end her prep career with 11 of her last 14 races won. Memorial golf tournament raises $8,000 for Open Doors for Youth

Sept. 12 was a perfect day for golf and a meaningful day to honor the memory of Noelle M. Anderson at the 27th annual Noelle M. Anderson Memorial Golf Tournament. More than 100 golfers gathered at Elk River Golf Course, raising $8,000 for Open Doors for Youth, this year’s beneficiary. Elliott and Chris Anderson presented the donation to Cindy Ley, executive director of Open Doors for Youth, which operates a drop-in center for youth ages 16-24 experiencing homelessness or housing instability. The organization recently opened The Next Door, a transitional housing program that provides a safe, supportive home for youth ages 18-24. In past years, tournament proceeds often funded scholarships for local high school students. Last year, the Andersons shifted to directing all funds raised to Open Doors for Youth to support the essential resources and services it provides to local youth. “We are thrilled that these funds can go directly to youth in need in our community,” Chris Anderson said.
