Rock Ridge baseball, softball win over the weekend

MAPLE GROVE—The Rock Ridge baseball team used a seven-run fifth on Friday to help take down Proctor 9-4 at neutral site Maple Grove.

Tyler Reid got the start on the bump for the Wolverines, giving up two unearned runs on five hits over 2.2 innings. He struck out one. Will Kemp pitched the final 4.1 innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits and three walks. He struck out four.

At the plate, Gunnar George led the way going 3-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Owen Hallin was 2-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Kemp went 2-3 with a double and triple. Aiden Bird and Connor Saxhaug picked up a hit each.

The Wolverines are back in action Wednesday when they travel to Two Harbors.

SOFTBALL

Rock Ridge 5,

Cambridge-Isanti 3

VIRGINIA—The Rock Ridge softball team took down Class 4A Cambridge-Isanti on Saturday, 5-3.

Taylor Morley got the win in the circle for the Wolverines, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits in a complete game effort. She struck out 10 batters along the way.

Morley and teammate Emma Lamppa shined at the plate, with each picking up a home run to aid the Rock Ridge cause. Chance Colbert, Mattelyn Seppi and Anna Westby all finished with a pair of hits with Seppi and Colbert picking up a double and Colbert running for a triple.

The Wolverines faced off with Duluth East Monday in Duluth and host Bemidji for a doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 4 p.m.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Northland 8-1,

Mesabi Range 2-7

VIRGINIA—The Minnesota North-Mesabi Range baseball team split Saturday’s MCAC North doubleheader with Northland, falling in the first game 8-2 before picking up their first conference win of the season in the later game, 7-1.

In the opener, Will Bittmann took the loss on the mound for Mesabi Range, giving up eight runs (five earned) on 10 hits over 5.2 innings of work. He struck out one. Landin Heinlen pitched the final 1.1 innings for the Norse, giving up nothing.

At the plate, Cameron Pietrusa was 2-3 with two runs scored. Brodie Vining was 2-4. Josh Summers and Alex Yrjanson picked up a hit each.

In the late game, the Norse brought in four runs in the second inning and two more in the third to help cruise to the win over the Pioneers.

Sam Sigurdson got the win on the mound in a complete game effort, giving up the one run on three hits and a walk. He struck out two.

At the plate, Pietrus awas 2-3 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored. Vining was 1-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Yrjanson finished 2-3 on the day with three runs scored.

Northland 10-9,

Mesabi Range 0-5

THIEF RIVER FALLS—In Sunday’s road doubleheader, the Norse fell in both games to Northland 10-0 and then 9-5.

Hunter Twete took the loss in the opener, giving up seven runs (five earned) on six hits and four walks over three innings of work. Luke Keating pitched the final 1.1 innings, giving up three earned runs on three hits and two walks.

Aiden Debner and Twete had the lone hits for the Norse in the five-inning game.

In the final game of the four-game series, the Norse pup up five runs over the first two innings but couldn’t withstand a six-run bottom of the second for the Pioneers.

Vining took the loss on the pitcher’s mound for Mesabi Range, giving up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and a walk over two innings of work. Landin Heinlen pitched the final four innings, giving up two unearned runs on three hits and three walks. He struck out one.

At the plate, Elijah Mack was 1-2 with a triple, two RBIs and a run scored. Aiden Debner was 1-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Cameron Pietrusa, Jaedyn Novy, Josh Summers and Will Bittmann all had hits in the losing effort.

Mesabi Range returns to action Saturday when they travel to Minnesota North-Itasca for a two-game doubleheader. They’ll host the Vikings for a doubleheader on Sunday.
