First ever pet-friendly homeless shelter opens in the Bronx
NEW YORK – New York City has opened its first-ever pet-friendly homeless shelter. For the first time, residents living in a New York City shelter won't have to leave their beloved pets behind. The Uplift Families Residence in the Bronx has 161 units that can house approximately 587 people. During the pilot program, which is run by the city's Department of Homeless Services and the Urban Resource Institute (URI) in conjunction with Pets and Animals Living Safely (PALS), five-apartment-style family units will be in use, with the hope of expanding to more. The New York Lottery announced one winning second prize ticket for the LOTTO game, worth $81,844, was sold for the Saturday, May 4, drawing. The ticket, which matched five numbers and the bonus number, was sold at Maita Deli Grocery Corp, located at 1571 Saint Johns Place in Brooklyn.

Around two and a half weeks after cat rescue group Little Wanderers NYC shared allegations of organized pitbull fighting taking place at certain locations around The Bronx, which the Bronx District Attorney has confirmed are under investigation by her office, an “extremely hungry” and “dehydrated” pitbull was found abandoned on Saturday, May 4, in the Allerton section of the borough.
