Ship Hits “Something” in Lake Ontario
The Coast Guard says a 689-foot ship hit “something underwater” in Lake Superior and started taking on water Saturday morning. The Coast Guard received a call at 6:53 a.m. that the bulk carrier Michipicoten, with a load of taconite, a low-grade iron ore, was taking on water about 35 miles southwest of Isle Royale, and it was listing 15 degrees. The Coast Guard then dispatched two helicopters from Traverse City, Michigan, and a boat from Bayfield, Wisconsin. They also coordinated with a National Park Service boat from Isle Royale to take 11 of the 22 crew members off the ship because of a fear of capsizing. No one was injured.
Annual military training underway at Camp Grayling
GRAYLING — There’s quite a bit of military activity going on in Camp Grayling, as thousands of soldiers from across the state are at the largest training facility in the United States. More than 3,000 soldiers from the Michigan National Guard and the National Armed Forces of Latvia have been going through high-octane drills for their annual training at the Joint Maneuver Training Center in Grayling. Soldiers landed at Camp Grayling on June 1 and have been busy conducting all sorts of military training, everything from tasks like shooting, moving, communicating to group operations like demolitions to shooting rocket artillery. Captain David Kennedy with the Michigan National Guard says that National Guardsmen are really a jack of all trades. They serve in uniform one weekend a month and two weeks a year, the rest of the time they work civilian jobs.
