The Skyline Eagles Have Landed Back In the Nest

Construction has come to an end and a new building stands in place of an old one. It’s time again for Friday night football games and awkward hallway head nods.

University of Utah economics merger stokes fears of impending layoffs.
The Salt Lake Tribune’s coverage of looming University of Utah layoffs is critical of the decision. And why wouldn’t they be? The announced changes could affect nearly 900 staff members. To sprinkle additional salt in the wound, the decision comes with a $10 million price tag for outside consultants. Still, the Trib listened to the U’s claim that no faculty will be impacted. That claim has already been proven false. The University of Utah Economics Department has long been an indicator species for the school’s ideological freedom. It has endured as a hotbed of heterodox leftist theory since the ‘90s but, as of this year, will be rolled into the business school’s Division of Quantitative Analysis of Markets and Organizations (QAMO)—which favors a traditionally stale “analysis plus capital plus execution” take on the subject—forcing out some truly talented economists. The layoffs will undoubtedly mask other such academic reorganizations to ensure the U stays perfectly bland in all matters.

Prep Rally: Goal-line play in American Fork-Lone Peak game a classic
The ending of the American Fork-Lone Peak game has been the most talked about moment in prep football in the Beehive State this year. In a game shown on the KJZZ Thursday Night Rivals broadcast, Lone trailed 28-24 and had the ball on American Fork’s 30-yard line with time for one more play. Needing a touchdown, the Knights’ Marshall Durfey threw toward the end zone where receiver Jaxon Cloward caught it and fell backwards. His body hit the end zone pylon but the officials ruled that the ball, however, didn’t go over the goal line but was just fractions short. The old proverb that “football is a game of inches” never rang truer.

High school football: Highland wins nail-biter over Murray for Region 10 bragging rights
The Region 10 football race centers around three teams, and two of those teams battled on the gridiron Friday night as reigning region champion Highland hosted Murray. It was a game full of chaos and one that seemed to drag on forever due to 40 combined penalties, but it was also a game of fun football in between where the win came down to the final play as Highland’s defense made a goal line stand to preserve a 34-29 lead as time ran out. The lead was the Rams’ first of the game and came with 2:20 remaining after Will Bauman intercepted a moving Dru Reuss and raced down his sideline 55 yards into the end zone. Willem Miles punched through the PAT and Highland found itself ahead. “Dru is a great quarterback, and I know he likes to make plays with his legs and that he will try to make something happen,” said Bauman. “He’s really good at it, but that time I read it right.” For Bauman, who plays both defensive back and quarterback for the Rams, it was a nice follow up as he had just helped the Rams cut into Murray’s lead the drive before with
