Longboard dancing is still in its infancy. But fans say the skate/dance hybrid has already spread in southern California, Paris, Seoul and other places with public squares or wide, open sidewalks. It's a blend of music, movement and risk. On a recent evening in Santa Monica, California, Hannah Dooling took advantage of a break in the rain to cruise in loping patterns around a near-empty parking lot on her longboard. The boards were originally designed for surfers entertaining themselves between sets. Most longboards range from 3 to 4 feet in length, about a foot longer than traditional skateboards. That can make them cumbersome, but also graceful. Longboards are used for carving sidewalk turns and bombing hills, as well as dancing.
