MAHOPAC, N.Y. –The Mahopac HS girls lacrosse team had a strong week, opening with an 11-7 victory over Carmel, and closing with an 18-17 thriller of a victory at Saugerties. Sandwiched in between last Thursday was a 16-10 loss at Greeley.

Saturday at Saugerties, the Wolf Pac held a 15-13 edge after three quarters, and the host outscored the Pac, 4-3, in the fourth to make it a close one.

Senior captain Juliana Mangione recorded the game-winner with 3:29 left in regulation, scoring in transition. Mangione, a fourth-year varsity standout, also delivered her 100th career goal and finished the game with 101.

Sophomore Ashley Koch finished with four goals, Gianna Cirelli had a hat-trick and added three assists, Gianna DeVito had three goals and one assist, and Adrianna  Pranzo and Erin Harney each had two goals. Mahopac keeper Amanda Carey made nine saves in net.

“We definitely came through when we needed it most,“ coach Amanda Frederick said. “It was close in the fourth, back-and-forth, and it came down to execution.

“Juliana was phenomenal,“ the coach added of Mangione. “And she was under the weather, so that shows you the type of athlete she is. We got a lot of scoring in the game, Ashley played great, Pranzo was big on draws, and Cirelli was big on offense.“

Last Thursday at Greeley, the Pac played what Frederick called their "best game of the season." Cirelli had a hat-trick and an assist, Koch added three goals, DeVito had two goals, Mangione had a goal and an assist, and Harney had one goal. Carey had eight saves in net.

Two days earlier at home, the Pac (4-7) took care of Carmel, behind three goals and one assist from Harney. DeVito added a hat-trick, Koch had two goals, Mangione had two goals and one assist, and Pranzo had a goal and one assist. Carey had 14 saves in the cage.

Frederick said she likes the progress her team has been showing.

“The girls played really well against Carmel, coming off a loss to Lakeland/Panas the prior week,“ she said. “They came out with a will to win.

“And overall, we’ve been making slow and steady improvement,“ the coach added. “Against Greeley, it was 7-7 at halftime, and we held our own. That was the best game we played all season, they’re really meshing well on the field.”

Mahopac is scheduled to host Senior Night this Thursday (May 2) at 6 p.m. against Arlington, and the Pac travels to Yorktown Saturday for a 3 p.m. game.
