The Madras boys 4x100 relay team set a new Madras High School record Wednesday, April 17 in a three-way meet in Madras.

The foursome, in order, was Damian Fuentes, Andres Aguilar, Gavin Williams and Michael Picard. They finished in 42.85, the fastest 4A time in the event this season. Picard was approaching 20 yards ahead of Gladstone’s anchor when he crossed the finish line. The Gladiator squad finished in 45.06.

“They are getting dialed in,” said Buffalo coach Mike Dove. “But there is still room for improvement.”

The event highlighted a sweep by Madras in the team scores in the three-team Tri-Valley Conference meet. In the boys competition, Madras tallied 85 points, Molalla 48 and Gladstone 20. The Buffalo girls won by the slightest of margins. Madras scored 55.5 and Gladstone 54.5. Molalla wasn’t far behind at 43 points.

Picard added to his big day by winning the 100 and 200. He ran the 100 in 11.43. Gabriel Rodriguez of Gladstone was second in 11.52, and two Buffs, Williams and Fuentes, were third and fourth. Picard took the 200 in 22.92. Aguilar and Fuentes were second and third, in 23.17 and 23.99.

Along with their sprinters, the power of the Buffalo squad is their jumpers. It was again Wednesday. The Buffs swept first through fourth in the long jump. Aguilar won in 20-05 with Williams on his heels at 19-11.25. Danny Easterling was third at 19-07 and Diego Sedano was fourth in 19-02.25. Williams and Easterling tied for first in the triple jump, each soaring 41-06. Aguilar did not get a qualifying jump off.

Senior Mike Evan had a PR and a first-place finish in the shot put, going 41-00, beating Donovan Robinson of Gladstone by under a foot. Isaiah Boise-LeClaire was fifth at 37-04.25. Boise-LeClaire was also fourth in the javelin to lead Madras, and Brock Etter led the Buffs in the discus with a fourth-place finish.

Junior Michael Young improved his personal record by a foot and a half in winning the pole vault. Young vaulted 11-06 to take the top spot. Another junior, Gabriel Fessler, was third, going 9-06.

A trio of Madras freshmen finished second through fourth in the 800. Theron Young was second at 2:24.29 followed by Paydon Mitchell and Julian Stwyer. Young led the Buffs in the 400, too, taking fifth. Mitchell and Stwyer finished fourth and fifth in the 1,500, in 5:01.70 and 5:05.30, respectively. Manny Meraz was the lead Buffalo in the 3,000, taking fifth. Gabriel Parker was sixth.

The Buffalo boys had no entrant in the 110 hurdles, but Orion Reynoso took fourth in the 300 hurdles.

Young and Christian Brown were second and third, respectively, in the high jump, going 5-06 and 5-04. Blake Halverson of Molalla won with a 5-08 effort.

The Buffs weren’t a factor in the 4x400 relay, taking fourth. Gladstone won in 3:45.76, followed by Molalla A and B entrants. Madras was fourth in 4:15.52. Christian Brown, Liam Circle, Mitchell and Young made up the Madras foursome.

“Across the board, all of our athletes are improving. Our challenge is now to get them to peak at the right time. We have seen great improvement across all events,” said Dove. “I would say our biggest improvement has been as a team. Our athletes have committed to our program and to the goal of begng the best we can be at the district meet. We are headed in the right direction and like I said it is now finding that way to have our kids peak at the right time.”

Picard leads Buffalo girls

Emily Picard, a junior, was flat dominating in the 800, running a 2:32.51, topping Shelby Goetz of Molalla by 23 seconds. Hannah Pope was third in the 800 with a 2:58.98. Picard also won the 1,500 by 12 seconds over teammate Talise Wapsheli, who was second. The pair ran 5:22.35 and 5:34.96.

The Buffalo girls swept the 100. Caylie Owens was first in 13.73. Freshman Ana Boyle was second in 13.99. Piper Anderson third at 14.28 and Addy Adams fourth in 14.53. In the 200, Miriam Egoavil led the Buffs by taking second to Molalla’s Sonja Fischer. Owens was third.

Boyle overcame a slow start to win the 100 hurdles, edging Emma Hugo of Molalla at the finish line, 18.32 to 18.41. Alessandra Benitez and Ashlyn Wolfe of Madras were fourth and fifth. Kahmussa Green had her personal best in the 300-meter hurdles to win going away with a 52.77. Boyle was second at 55.37. Wolfe and Benitez took third and fourth. Green was also second in the 400 while Hannah Pope was third. Sonja Fischer of Molalla won the event.

Like the boys, the Buff girls also have a strong long and triple jump contingent. Emma Hugo of Molalla won the long jump by an inch over runner-up Adams, 14-01.50 to 14-00.5. Pope was third with a 13-08 and Hope Wright fourth in 13-04.

In the triple jump, the Buffs took the top five spots with a Gladstone jumper the only non-Buffalo in the field. Egoavil won by nearly three feet with a 31-06 flight.

Adams took the high jump competition, going 4-08. Skye Victorino was third for Madras at 3-10.

The Buffalo girls combined to easily win the 4x400 relay, with Boyle, Egoavil, Green and Picard teaming up to run a 4:26.45, 11 seconds faster than second-place Molalla. Molalla got the win in the 4x100 race, though, and Madras took second.

Wapsheli finished second in the 3,000 with a 12:09.53 time. Annalyse Jenson of Molalla won the race in 11:35.43. Ruth Rodriguez of Madras was third.

In the field, Arema White’s second in the shot, going 25-09, was a highlight. Natalee Nice of Molalla threw 27-07 to win. Nice also won the discus and White was third. Kailee Mora of Madras was fourth. Mora’s third in the javelin led the Buffs’ entrants. Leah Affeldt took second in the pole vault, going 6-00. Gladstone Kaia James won with a 6-06 mark.
