Sayre receives recognition as outstanding volunteer
Handcyclist Tom Sayre, of Warrenton, was selected as an outstanding volunteer for his service in support of Oregon State Parks between January 2023 and February. During that period, he served on the Oregon Outdoor Recreation (Land and Water Conservation Fund) Committee and the Accessibility Design Standards Advisory Working Group.
County commission candidates make final push before election
With less than a week before the election, candidates for District 2 on the Clatsop County Board of Commissioners are taking their final steps along the campaign trail. Tessa Scheller and Anthony Huacuja are competing for an open seat on the ballot Tuesday after Commissioner John Toyooka chose not to run for reelection. District 2 encompasses Gearhart, Clatsop Plains and portions of Seaside and Warrenton.
Late couple made significant contribution to Liberty Theatre
Petra and Michael Mathers, an Astoria couple who were active in the arts, left $250,000 to the Liberty Theatre after their deaths in February. The Astoria theater described the bequest as transformative and said it would play a crucial role in enhancing programming.
Volunteers needed to remove Scotch broom
WARRENTON — Volunteers are needed to help the North Coast Land Conservancy remove Scotch broom from the Surf Pines Habitat Reserve in Clatsop Plains from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The work party will meet in the parking lot of the Surf Pines gatehouse.

Grant to support Spanish language collection at Astoria Library
A grant from the Roundhouse Foundation will supply a new collection of Spanish language books in the Astoria Library. “We are excited about the opportunity to better serve our Latinx community,” Suzanne Harold, the library director, said in a statement. “We encourage everyone in Astoria to visit the library and see all the resources we offer.”
Cycling event and health fair set for Barbey Maritime Center
Columbia Memorial Hospital is partnering with the American Lung Association for a Reach the Beach Oregon Cycle for Air event on Saturday. Cyclists will travel from Sauvie Island to the Barbey Maritime Center on Marine Drive, in Astoria where there is a Clear the Air for lung health fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
