Ronan City wrap-up: Infrastructure, annexation & new businesses
Ronan council members Larry Hall and Lindsay Myers, along with Public Works director Dan Miller, presented an end-of-year recap at the Ronan Chamber of Commerce luncheon, held Thursday, Dec. 4 at Ninepipes Lodge. Over this year, the council has made decisions or is currently working on infrastructure, real estate developments, land annexations and property purchases to help Ronan grow. MREC moves forward After 20 years, the Pioneer Days Committee secured a lease of the Mission Range Event Complex (MREC) property off Mink Road from the City of Ronan. The city purchased this property after the committee donated the funds to them. Committee president Mike Bartel explained in a later interview that this was a faster and easier route to obtain the property, which the committee will now lease at low cost from the city. Bartel said they plan to break ground in the spring to add power, water and sewer to the property. The Pioneer Days Committee will need materials to build an arena and will be hosting a fundraising campaign soon. Bartel explained that they put up the initial amount for the city to purchase part of this property in 2005, but Lake County owned a portion of it

Permitting Isn’t Pricing Us Out. Investors Are.
Montanans want what our parents and grandparents wanted: a fair chance to build a life, protect the land we love, and make homeownership attainable for our families. I agree with the author of “The Soul of Kalispell is at Stake” that homeownership is essential to strong communities. But I disagree with the idea that “red tape, impact fees, and regulatory delays” are the primary obstacles keeping Montanans out of homes.

Somers condominium project gets favorable recommendation
A proposal to build eight condominiums on 10 acres of land in Somers received a positive recommendation from the Flathead County Planning Board Wednesday. The condominiums include 28 commercial units and an additional 18 live-work residential units, serviced by shared wells and septic systems. A live-work unit consists of a ground floor working space connected to a single small apartment, according to the staff report. It is expected to be constructed in three phases, located at 757 through 687 Somers Road, with an estimated completion date in 2031. Since the area of the structure’s location is unzoned, owners will craft a homeowners association agreement to control business activity within the condominiums. Representing the developer, Greg Jones, with WCC Engineering, said commercial businesses will likely be trades, such as landscaping or electricians. Planning board members noted the small size of the units and limited parking area, which is projected to be less than an acre in size. Board member Marie AuClaire speculated this could limit the types of businesses moving into the units. “Even if there was, like a hairdresser or something, it’d probably be like a one-client-at-a-time type of thing,” Au-Claire said. "I don't really see a lot of offsite
