Trolley No. 1779 to return at 2026 Old Threshers Reunion
MOUNT PLEASANT — Trolley No. 1779 will return to service ferrying attendees between the campgrounds, main grounds and log village on the Midwest Electric Railroad at the annual Old Threshers Reunion next weekend in Mount Pleasant. The open-air trolley car, originally built in 1911 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where it was in use until 1965, has not run since 2020. The car was initially taken out of service for maintenance on its trucks, which drive the trolley forward. However, as Midwest Old Threshers trolley director Maddy Hobbs explained, more issues popped up. “Once you deep dive into one thing, it seems like, with old things, you find more that is wrong,” Hobbs said. After the extent of the maintenance needed was discovered, the trolley’s trucks were sent to the Gomaco Trolley Co. in Ida Grove, Iowa, for repair. The trolley’s electric motors, meanwhile, were repaired at Electrical Engineering & Equipment, or 3E’s, in Des Moines. Now with the repairs completed, No. 1779 will rejoin five other trolley cars at this year’s Old Threshers Reunion. No. 1779 will join No. 1718, which also is originally from Brazil, as well as trolley cars from Chicago, Keokuk and Milan, Italy, in service.
