Wheelchair pickleball player swings his paddle with a purpose

It wasn't easy when this local pickleballer lost his mobility, bound to using a cane.

"When I lost my ability to stand and walk without a cane, the thing I missed most was pickleball," said Gerry Whelan of Roxborough.

Whelan thought his days on the court were over, until he found out about wheelchair pickleball.

Now, every swing is serving his passion in the process.

"The main thing is to just get the general population accepting of the fact that if you're in a chair, you can still play," said Whelan.

Whelan is a friend of Wyndmoor's very own OPUS Pickleball Club.

"Every day when I'm here, I know almost everybody by first name. I think what we found is that people end up coming back here because of the culture and the environment in the community," said Ed Morris, owner of OPUS Pickleball Club.

Two Ingredients Become Warm Apple Pie Donut Holes

A two-ingredient recipe should not produce something this comforting, but biscuit dough and apple pie filling know how to create convincing little donut holes. The dough surrounds the fruit and bakes into a golden shell while the apple center becomes warm, soft, and fragrant with familiar pie spices. Each bite feels like a miniature hand pie crossed with a bakery donut, only without making pastry dough or managing a long ingredient list. The small size creates plenty of browned surface, and a cinnamon-sugar coating can add the sparkle and sweetness that makes the finished batch look especially inviting. These treats are proof that a refrigerated shortcut can still produce the aroma, texture, and warm fruit center everyone associates with much more complicated baking.

Four Ingredients Make This Roast Fall Apart by Itself

A slow-cooker roast that practically shreds itself sounds like the result of careful seasoning and a long ingredient list, but this version needs only four ingredients to reach that tender finish. The slow cooker provides time and gentle heat, allowing the beef to soften while the simple seasonings concentrate into a rich cooking liquid. By dinner, the meat pulls apart beneath a fork and the entire house smells as though someone spent all day actively preparing the meal. The short ingredient list makes it realistic for busy mornings, limited grocery budgets, and anyone who wants comfort food without a complicated recipe. It is hearty, familiar, and impressive in the effortless way slow-cooker dinners often are. Few things feel better than opening the lid after a long day and discovering the main course already tender, hot, and waiting to be served.

Crescent Dough Turns Into a Cinnamon-Sugar Dessert Pizza

Crescent dough, cinnamon sugar, butter, and vanilla glaze come together in a dessert that tastes like cinnamon rolls decided to become pizza. The dough bakes into a soft, flaky base with golden edges, while the cinnamon-sugar layer melts across the surface and settles into every seam. A simple glaze adds the sweet finish people expect from bakery pastries, but the flat pizza shape makes the whole treat easier to slice and share. It looks inviting straight from the baking sheet and requires none of the rolling, rising, or careful shaping associated with homemade cinnamon rolls. Every wedge offers buttery pastry, warm spice, and enough glaze to turn an ordinary tube of crescent dough into something that smells as though a bakery opened in the kitchen.
