Rapper .idk. on connecting culture, music, and history on a global scale through 'Son de L'amour'

A historic moment was marked at the French Embassy in Washington D.C., on June 20, when it opened its doors for one of its most ambitious public-facing music and community activations to date.

Spearheaded by DMV-raised artist .idk., 'Son de L'Amour,' was a first-of-its-kind cultural experience celebrating Juneteenth and Fête de la Musique (World Music Day) through music, community, and cultural exchange.

"This whole thing has been about giving back to the area that I come from," says rapper .idk.. "And what this event means to me is actually bringing people in spaces that they've never really been to create memories that they'll never forget," he adds.

The cultural experience was presented in partnership with the French Embassy in the United States, the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, and Indigo, a new artist-first platform built to help creators deepen their connection with fans through community-driven experiences.

"If I could describe today in one word, it would just be an experience," says YungManny, one of the many artists that were able to perform at the event. "I've never been a part of anything like this, and it's honestly something that I can take back home to my family and say like I was a part, you know,'' YungManny adds.

Son de L'Amour also marked the public debut of Indigo, the artist-first startup founded by Demi Weitz, Luc Giraud, and Saskia Giraud. The platform powered exclusive fan experiences throughout the weekend, including access to the limited-edition .idk. + Barriers collaboration, which first launched through a gamified educational experience centered on incarceration, community and themes that have informed .idk.'s life and creative perspective.

"Indigo provided the infrastructure to do something really cool," says .idk.. "To have the mini-games that actually educate people without them fully knowing it on Juneteenth and some of the things that are going on in America, I think that was beautiful, and their platform supports thoughtfulness," he adds.

Through Son de L'Amour, .idk. has once again demonstrated his ability to connect music with community, using culture as a vehicle to bring together local institutions, international partners, emerging talent, and fans under a shared vision of creativity, opportunity, and connection.

"In a lot of communities, it's kind of tough to get a lot of people in one space together," says .idk.. "So, for me, I think the beauty of it all is being able to bring everybody together under this idea that the sound of love is music," he adds.
